OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - The chief federal court clerk who survived the 1995 bombing of the Oklahoma City federal building said Friday he inhaled so much smoke and dust following the blast that he struggled to breath and felt like he was drowning.
"It was real hazy," U.S. District Court Clerk Robert Dennis told a group of Federal Bar Association attorneys on the eighth anniversary of the Sept. 11 terror attacks. "It went totally dark, couldn't see anything."
Dennis said he was in the first floor lobby of the nine-story Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building following a meeting with General Services Administration officials when a 4,000-pound truck bomb ripped through the structure on April 19, 1995.
The blast killed 168 people, including 19 children, and injured hundreds more. It was the worst terrorist attack in U.S. history before the Sept. 11 attacks.
