Radical, Racist Signs Featured At 9/12 March
This morning on ABC’s Good Morning America, Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC) embraced the protesters at today’s 9/12 March in Washington, DC, saying that he was “glad they’re here to take back their country.” He characterized the attendees as nonpartisan, adding that “it’s not about President Obama. It’s not about the Democrats.” Several other Republican lawmakers, including Reps. Tom Price (GA), Mike Pence (IN), Marsha Blackburn (T), and Phil Gingrey (GA) planned to attend and speak at the event.

Members of ThinkProgress attended today’s march and the signs carried by these protesters were hardly nonpartisan — and were often racist, radical portrayals of Obama, despite DeMint’s claim. Some examples of what we saw:

In an interview with the Washington Independent, DeMint claimed that the attendees at the march were “a cross-section of the population.” When it was pointed out to him that almost everyone there was white, DeMint simply said, “It’s probably just the time and organization and the media that promoted it.”

Mark McKinnon, a former adviser to Sen. John McCain’s (R-AZ) presidential campaign, has warned conservatives from embracing events like the 9/12 March. “It’s bad for Republicans because in the absence of any real leadership, the freaks fill the void and define the party,” McKinnon said.

John Ennis has been reporting in his blog a bunch of truly racist and violent signs at the DC march today.
Here's his blog: http://www.johnennis.tv/blog/from-the-9-12-million-maniac-march/

And here are some of the more shocking photos he posted. They are amping up the violent rethoric:

5. It seems like "The Long-Legged Mack Daddy"
would qualify as racist. The others are just hateful. These guys' signs aren't nearly as clever as signs I've seen at antiwar marches.

13. I heard the expression used
during a trial of a notorious local pimp that I was transcribing. The underage girls who he kept by keeping them high on cocaine all the time universally referred to him as their "mack daddy." I suppose it doesn't necessarily have to apply to an African-American pimp, but could refer to ANY pimp -- and the meaning seems to have expanded out to include any so-called "ladies' man."

In any event, I don't think it's a very flattering epithet, and the intent of the sign-holders seems clear.

10. From Random House Word of the Day
Or...

What does "MacDaddy" mean anyway?
The expression mack daddy, as it is usually spelled, has a few senses. The earliest one, and the origin, is 'a man who is a successful pimp or violent criminal'.

This use was apparently popularized by an anonymous African-American song of the 1950s or earlier, celebrating (and titled) "The Great MacDaddy," a flashy and successful pimp. This use of MacDaddy as a name is probably from the earlier mack 'a pimp' and daddy, as a form of address in jive talk. The term gained currency in rap music by the late 1980s or so, when it also began to spread in mainstream language.

Mack daddy is also used in some other senses parallel to extended senses of mack. One is 'a good-looking man; a ladies' man; playboy'. Another is 'a person, especially a man, who is influential, intelligent, successful, etc.'. This is a favorite partly because of an example published in a 1995 collection of college slang: "Jane Austen is the mack-daddy of English literature."

Who knew pimp songs could lead to that?

20. OMG. I'm so angry and sad all at the same time. I'd love to slap those grins off their faces..
How fucking embarrassing for anyone who knows those pieces of shit.. especially the little grandma types with their racist and religiously insane signs. And they act like they're so damn proud. It's one thing for people in a protest to have signs of Bush looking like a clown, or Alfred E. Newman, or Curious George, those are done in fun.

But that shit? OMG??? Religiously insane, racist, communist-phobes, dangerous people. Even at the protests I've attended, anyone who did a Bush/Hitler sign was actually shunned... as going too far overboard. And these ugly white people smiling like they're so clever and patriotic.

This event DID bring out the insane ones.. didn't? THese are the same fuckers that screamed threats and obscenities about Obama during Palin rallies. THIS is what those assholes have created by not ratcheting this down. The RNC and FOX and CNN, and the lobbyists are USING these mentally ill people (i mean this in all sincerity) to push their own agenda. If if something happens to our President because of it, they'll just shrug.. or point fingers that they're not responsible for anyone ill enough to follow through.

Please.. remind me why I don't hate America right now....

18. Oy, the crucified Lady Liberty one
And the "Abort Obama" shirt. wtf?

I'll admit the one that says "debt is the slavery of the free" is one I find vaguely appealing. Of course, the woman holding it should have been doing so since 2001.

Anotehr "WTF" one is the one asking for his smallpox vaccination. Do I even want to know the story behind that?

The one claiming Obama's "trafficking in prostitation" is my favorite, I think.

19. No, and all of this started this summer at the McCain/Palin rallies..
the republican right is playing with fire by stoking all of this. It's only a matter of time before one of these lunatics takes it a step further. Things will get very ugly in this country.
