26. I owned a rifle when I was a kid.

My father gave it to me for Xmas when I was 12. It had been his when he was a kid and my grandfather, who was something of a gunsmith, cleaned it up and made new sights for it. So, I had a gun like all the other kids in my rural neighborhood. He said that I should learn to use it and then put it away because guns are mostly bad. He said that he would never own a gun because he had seen the horrors of war and had made a vow. He and a couple of his brothers were WWII veterans and they all bore some physical or emotional scars from the war. None of them showed any interest in guns.

Over the years I've noticed that most real combat veterans feel that way.
