cnn reporting that joe wilson has raised over a million dollars....
this can only encourage more of these fuckwads to lash out at the President.

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- U.S. Rep. Joe Wilson -- the South Carolina Republican who heckled President Obama during his speech to a joint session of Congress -- has raised at least $1 million in contributions, a campaign aide confirmed.
News of that cash haul comes after Wilson directly asked in a Web video for campaign cash to fend off attacks from political opponents and said he's standing by his opposition to Democratic efforts at health care reform.

Wilson has come under fire for shouting "you lie" to Obama during the Wednesday night address to Congress on health care reform. The lawmaker soon apologized for his behavior, viewed by Republicans and Democrats as an ill-mannered breach of political decorum.

The remark energized Wilson's opponents and supporters, who have been opening their wallets and sending donations to Wilson and Rob Miller, his Democratic opponent in next year's congressional race.

3. Of course you have to read way down in the small print
to learn that his opponent has also raised over a million dollars.

I guess that doesn't fit in so well with CNN's agenda...

5. The problem is - and I hope I'm wrong -
Wilson's getting his donations from a lot of his constituents, who will vote him back in November of 2010, but Ritter's money is coming from all over the country, and I don't know that that's going to give him any kind of real advantage with the voters in that godforsaken district in SC.

But, still, the idea that people are sending this tool money because of what he did suggests to me that our country has, indeed, passed the tipping point. I'm no longer sure there's any way back for us - that our time for common courtesy and civility has come and gone.

Lamentable...........................

11. The next time an ass yells out during a presidential speech to Congress...
Somebody stick out a foot and trip him on his way out. There really do need to be consequences. Since Obama will not prosecute those who violated subpoenas and otherwise broke our laws and betrayed our trust, they feel they can act with impunity. AND THEY CAN.

17. i dont know but i see this differently, how many people here would love to have seen a senator call
out to Bush "liar" etc etc two years or so ago, i know bamba is going to slap me down here, but i kinda like the idea of politicians calling each other out if they feel the other ones talking bullshit..

21. I'd never "slap you down," hon, because
I like you too much, and because I am burdened with terminally good manners.

It's much better and far more constructive to disagree in an agreeable manner. I don't share your view, dawg, because I believe in good behavior and I don't hold with having our legislative and executive and judicial branches turn into WWF events.

On the campaign trail, though, yeah, I'd totally agree with you. No holds barred there - let them go after each other in the plainest language imaginable, and let's see who's still standing when they're done.

But, I respect the office of the Presidency, and the idea of anyone - let alone a member of Congress, during a Presidential address to a Joint Session - loudly calling our President a liar does not appeal to me. It doesn't advance the dialogue, nor does it provide a good example for other countries - remember the ones to which we're going to introduce democracy?

You know the old line about catching more flies with honey?

Well, I'm not interested in catching flies unless I'm playing RF for the Yankees, but I do not want to see my country governed by people who behave as boorishly as Joe Wilson...............................

31. Thank you! I agree
If there are no sanctions for this outburst, then just watch when a Republican gets in, specially in a Democratic controlled House

18. It will get more outrageous -
given the positive reinforcement these bigots are getting, what's to keep them from escalating and behaving even worse in whatever forum they choose?

There have to be consequences, but, so far, Pelosi and Obama are simply "being gracious" and I fear they don't understand that their gentility is accomplishing nothing but enabling these bad tools.......................

20. yeah bamba there should be consequences, but that should be the electorate
as i said how much would you have loved to see kucinich or kennedy or kerry call bush a liar to his face about the WMDs. i think the elected representatives should follow their conscience and not toe the party line when it comes to putting up with bullshit from their peers..

25. In the campaign, yes, I agree, dawg -
that's where they should be honest and straight-talking, right out of the Harry Truman school. We agree on that.

But, once the oaths of office have been taken, I demand good behavior from my elected representatives. I would accept no less from my children, who were raised with good manners and respect for the sensibilities of others, so why would I accept it from my legislators?

You can't behave that way in a courtroom or a boardroom, a classroom or a movie theater. You should not behave that way in the halls of Congress.

That should go without saying, but Joe Wilson has made it seem like boorish, ignorant, repugnant behavior is acceptable there, and that makes me very, very sad......................

15. I think there may be a good possibility that a chunk of the $ this goober is receiving
are coming from the booger eaters outside the district who have adopted him as their new symbol of defiance. Judging by some of the signs I saw here today, he seems to have attained godlike status among the ignorami.

And I'm not aware how many black voters live in that district but if it's a large percentage, it seems to me it wouldn't take a lot of effort to mobilize them to vote for the opponent in 2010.

Unfortunately I fear you are correct nevertheless in that common courtesy and civility are no longer regarded as virtues in the good ol' US of A.

32. Yeah. This is just the natural reaction to all the money our side sent to Miller
But Wilson's poll numbers did drop in his own district - clearly manners still matter, for whatever that's worth.

Gotta make him look like he's keeping up with his opponent.

While I support his right to call out Obama if he believes that he is lying, that was not the time. Shouting it out like that in the middle of his speech shows that he has no class.

Also, I have never read anything that says CNN is against Obama/the Democratic party until this thread. It seems that no one likes CNN.

23. This person believes libertarians are just lazy...can't commit and enjoy being
buzzkillers, cockblockers, and generally are as popular as a turd in a punchbowl or a fart in a spacesuit.

Now as to democratic/progressive beliefs...

One cannot support or oppose something one does not understand. To understand one must have some modicum of self-reflection and/or empathy; at the very least, one has to have some self-respect.

Jury's still out regarding your support as a libertarian.

that's because I've watched CNN.

It's a shoddy operation.

You're new to DU, so that's why you never read anything about the distaste for CNN. Now that you're enlightened, maybe you'll watch it from a more enlightened perspective, and your enlightened self-interest will lead you the rest of the way.....................

7. And if he gets reprimanded in the house for what he did he'll raise another million :(
What surprises me most is how slow Wilson was to start raising cash compared to his opponent, to suddenly gaining it at a much faster rate while his opponent's slows down a lot. I mean in the first 24 hours Wilson had $200,000, and his opponent had $700,000, and now this?

What really pisses me off most is that we reprimand him in the house then he'll probably raise another million dollars from pissed off radical conservatives, while our base won't be motivated to do the same. His refusal to apologize on the house floor is probably what got him to suddenly raise $800,000 the last 2 days, that and the fund raising plea.

We have to have CASH to promote a candidate. Voting with our pocketbooks.
