Are there more of them or more of us? |
|
I guess the important question is: Will there be more of them than us when the next election rolls around? Or was today simply a strong display of their base getting motivated? Would they re-gain the "independents"? And would the Democratic vote be lackluster in the next election, especially if there is no healthcare bill passed?
But if there is a healthcare bill passed, will that not motivate our side more in the next election and would it not demoralize the "tea-baggers"? So today's display of the Million Moran March will have little effect on the next election if we can pass a good health care bill. What is your opinion?

1. depends on hoow you define them and us, if you say far left then less |
|
than the rest of the population, if you say democrat, then probuably 50%, liberal a lot less, it all depends on what part of the political spectrum you want to put your base line. :)

cannot be won without the independents. Neither side Dem or Rep can win a national election without them. The mistake which always happens is that the party which wins always views that win as a mandate for every one of their policies without regard for the level of national support. Then the next election cycle comes around and the independents swing the other way.

And I imagine that over time, assuming a good health care bill is passed, many will accept it and see that it is an improvement.
My guess is that much of the hostility to health care reform is simply because people do not like change and the greater the perceived change, the greater the resistance to it.

21. So if the population of the US is 300 million, let's estimate that 25% |
|
are the far right base of the Republicans...the ones motivated most by hate and most willing to travel to be at this rally. That would give us 75 million people. Now, let's give them 60,000 showed up today. That gives us .0008% of the far right base that showed up today. With 6 months planning and the support of FreedomWorks and FAUX news.
I'm not really concerned that it is an overwhelming amount of people. I think the media is only pushing the whackos because they think it makes for good ratings, and that makes it look like they actually are gaining a lot of traction. Those folks were the base.

22. Eight months ago America voted against the status quo... |
|
how much has changed? What exactly would a shift in support be atributed to? These are the same people that voted for McCain/Palin and can't accept or respect the will of the majority. If you surveyed this crowd how many do you really think voted for Obama? Judging by the schizophrenic messaging on their signs, they are a compilation of pissed off right wing fringe groups. They were pissed off before Obama was elected, but would have remained silent and angry if only it was'nt a "black man" elected. They thought they were gonna have to suffer through with Hillary. Obama was more than their little world could cope with. They've been bringin up the the rear of civilization since the Confederacy...just a little louder than usual.

24. When the Civil Rights Act passed |
|
the segregationists did not go away immediately, they lingered on for a while as even their former leaders tried to distance themselves from the movement.
For the moment the GOP is clinging to the loyal fanatics, but in 10-15 years, they will be trying to claim that the tea-baggers were liberals (see modern right-wing spin on the civil rights movement).

26. One cheerful fact to keep in mind. |
|
What the most progressive people in America can merely dream of having, only the most radically conservative people in other developed nations still struggle to accept.
What ‘we’ want is not some impossible Utopia. In countries as developed and modern as our own, it is a working reality.
But at times, that simple fact can be drowned out by the moronic gibbering of ‘they’ — the tools of our oppressors.
As for the next election, it depends upon how President Obama performs on health care. One of the reasons why those other developed nations are so much further to the left than America, is because they were impelled that way by popular support following the instigation of universal health care.
It is the one issue that everybody eventually ‘gets.’
(Well, everybody except microencephaletic cretins and HMO shareholders.)

29. It depends on what issue. |
|
Health care, I'd say more on our side of wanting health care fixed. Other issues it will vary depending on what part of the country, what socio-economic background, religious or not, male or female, etc. And even those are not always reliable.
Sheesh, in my family there are 25 opinions on every issue. And that's only for about 6 relatives....
