1. He was being generous.
There is a reason that there exists a show titled "Are you smarter than a 5th grader?"

For this to be entertaining, there has to be some drama and comedy... the drama is that so many people could LOSE, and the comedy is that they lost to a 10 or 11 year old kid.

But there has to be the element of risk... and the nutters on the Mall today... well, they would be the ones to likely lose these contests.
