2. In all honesty, I don't think it failed.
It was a sizable crowd and they got full media coverage - front page of WaPo today and full live streaming video on CNN and CSPAN yesterday, with numerous reports from other M$M dispersed throughout the day.

As others have pointed out this morning, the size of the crowd does not matter - the perception that follows will. This will become a great success story for conservative (sic) grassroots, mark my words.

I think that's how most will perceive it. What's their real beef--a black man as President. Most people know that.

5. They are not going away and they play for keeps
FreedomWorks, for example, is well-funded and targets college students, and well as fringe people/groups who are more apt to 'show up.'

It's one thing to make fun of them, or point out their overt racism, etc. - but, we cannot ignore them.

They hyped the hell out of this event and got what? 50K to show up? That's small time.

16. I hope they will continue to expose themselves for who they really are.
Already, the GOP is being torn to bits, with their racist diatribes, with Ron Paul Libertarians giving them a run for their money, and for all their faux family values crap that manifests itself in an oddly high number of Repug marital affairs and various indiscretions, just to name a few.

My fear, and perhaps it's unfounded, is that some of these folks organizing are authoritarian right wing radicals of the Rove et al type, esp in reference to FreedomWorks.

17. I do not think your fear is necessarily unfounded - we need to watch the Karl Roves and Dick Armeys
24/7 from now on. They must not be left to their own devices, and some, like Rove should be hoisted up with his on petard.

However, I believe the GOP is in its "last throes" as a political contender. In 20 years, it will have only a few seats at the table, occupied by radicals.

18. The more extreme the better
The more hate filled, extreme, and insane they become the more they push themselves away from the majority of Americans. Let them all carry guns, wear hoods, and shriek at the top of their lungs about how every government program needs to be torn down. Most rational adults are smart enough to sense that in the abstract they may dislike "big government" they also don't want to lose the programs that make their lives better.

Hell if McCain got 59 million votes last Nov, and Limpballs has 15 million listeners rightwads are certainly capable of having a million people on the mall. I'd worry if they had big numbers in the legislature.

1.5 to 2 million people march on Washington D.C Tea Party protest rally September 12 2009 9 12 09 Thanks Glenn Beck 9-12 project Freedom Plaza <...>

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LoPud1TeubM ("1.5 to 2 million march on Washington D.C Tea Party protest rally")

Subtle. Of course to "count them yourself" you'd have to not recount the same people across time, so the best you can do (without digitally de-duping headcounts from the low-quality mpeg with compression artifacts) is pick one freeze frame (of circa 5,000 people?) and pretend it represents a million folks offscreen; alternately, you can pretend that each frame represents a completely unique set of protesters since teabaggers walk so fast. Either way, it's pure fantasy:

Matt Kibbe, president of FreedomWorks, the group that organized the event, said on stage at the rally Saturday that ABC News was reporting that 1 million to 1.5 million people were in attendance.

At no time did ABC News, or its affiliates, report a number anywhere near as large. ABCNews.com reported an approximate figure of 60,000 to 70,000 protesters, attributed to the Washington, D.C., fire department. In its reports, ABC News Radio described the crowd as "tens of thousands."

It's the only thing I've seen. It isn't 20,000, it isn't two million.

Neither the media nor the government was there to record the size of the event. There've been no strategically placed cameras or aerial shots to work with. It's been pure speculation.

29. Actually they "succeeded". The media covered it pretty thoroughly
and even today, it's being talked about..

There is no way to accurately "get the numbers", so each protest group wants to bump up their numbers.

No one will ever prove exactly how many showed up.

We have to face facts,,

republicans always "win", when it comes to media coverage.. they are the "default" ..we are the upstarts, rabble-rousers, counter-culture,

When they protest, media seeks out Moms with strollers & grandpas with oddly spelled signs..we we protest they look for bearded hippie-types, and people with colorful puppets

The goal is to portray them as patriotic (if misguided) folks whose hearts are in the right place.. we are the ones who want to turn things upside down.

because we don't "deal" in catchy two-word nonsensical slogans, the media has no use for us.
