Christopher Kelly saw a bleak future as he prepared to plead guilty to a federal corruption charge last week, with a trial alongside former Gov. Rod Blagojevich still looming.

"I know my life is over," said Kelly, sweating in a blue shirt outside a federal courtroom and finding it difficult to stand still for very long.

Kelly, 51, who was to report to federal prison officials this week to start serving an 8-year sentence, died Saturday at Stroger Hospital in what authorities said was a possible suicide from an over-the-counter medication.

Kelly's death ended a tumultuous year in his life. He twice pleaded guilty to federal charges. He was estranged from his wife. And he faced serious financial problems, partly due to gambling debts. But Kelly indicated he was not going to turn on Blagojevich despite pressure from prosecutors.

The chief Blagojevich fundraiser -- who also was one of Blagojevich's closest advisers -- had been indicted three times by federal authorities in recent years, the last time in April in the sweeping conspiracy case against the ex-governor.

Maybe Blagojevich is just a good actor, but he certainly has not seemed to take any aspect of this whole scandal seriously...
