Republican NON mea culpas
I read a post this morning about Ron Mckinnon - the former aide to Bush and McCain - in which he volunteered his assistance to Joe Wilson'r opponent and tells us that he has already donated to his opponents Campaign because of Wilson's irresponsible and loutish behavior.

When I sat down at my computer to check email this afternoon I found I had received e-mail confirmation of a letter to the editor I sent to the Fort Worth Stat-Telegram re: a column about the "nuts" in the Republican party.
(I apologize if you have already read this letter when I posted it yesterday)

"Moderate Republicans own the "nuts"

An article by Bud Kennedy, 9/12/09, outlines the concerns of Gen. Tom Daniels that “something is wrong in America.” The reactions we are seeing from the right wing "nuts", particularly in regards to President Obama, he fears, are nothing more than “unabated racism.”

I share these concerns, but let me point out a few things that he has conveniently missed.

General Daniels notes that he loved President George H.W. Bush, and inquires, “Where are the moderates in the Republican Party? Where are the people like George Bush who made sense? They’re letting the nuts lead them around by the nose."

He is talking about the same President Bush who’s own road to the White House was paved by his protégé Lee Atwater’s race bating campaign ads. He is talking about the same “moderate Republicans” and Reaganites who coddled the extreme right wing, negligently thinking that they could control the racism and hate, only to see them become bulls in our national China Shop.

Kennedy adds: “I know what some of you are going to say. It’s political, not racial.” Unfortunately it is both. Republicans courted these “nuts” for their crass political purposes. Now they have to live with their “unabated racism.”

I am a little weary of hearing these non mea culpas from Republican enablers. To paraphrase one “Republican moderate,” Gen. Colin Powell, the Pottery Barn Rule applies here: You brought ‘em, you own ‘em.

So, while we applaud his integrity, don't forget that he worked for Bush & McCain. I'm sure I don't need to mention all of their transgressions, vis a vis encouraging this type of disgusting behavior.

I am encouraged that he recognizes that Wilson is a lout as well as a nut. I will be more impressed when he admits that his whole party bears more than a little responsibility.
