New car buyers likely to go for domestic vehicles: Report

By Ellen van Wageningen, The Windsor StarSeptember 9, 2009

Encouraged by a recent survey showing most new car buyers will consider North American brands, the United Auto Workers has released its 2010 list of union-made vehicles.

A U.S. survey by Consumer Reports National Research Center released last week found 81 per cent of new car buyers said they were likely or very likely to consider an American brand.

"When customers visit the showroom to look at vehicles made by our members, they're going to find top-quality cars and trucks in every price range and in every product category," UAW president Ron Gettelfinger said in a statement released Wednesday.

19. You mean the icon?
I primarily have it because the dude looks like me, having a similar genetic lineage.

When I shave I look like Jack Black, if that makes you feel better.

If you are implying I have Marxist leanings, then you might be correct in a purely academic sense. He was correct about a great deal of things and I appreciate his works.

I use Toyotas because a mostly broke college student can't afford the upkeep and risk of many makes. Right now I am still using a 92 Corolla that has only required some minor replacement of parts here and there. I am currently looking at purchasing a brand new vehicle entirely with cash that I have saved up, and it will probably be a Toyota. Excellent has mileage and they tend to not have the hiccups that I have seen over and over again with American models.

If the American manufacturers produced a quality product like they used to that required little upkeep and ran with a great mileage I would likely purchase it. As it stands, they have nothing like the Yaris Sedan or Corolla. I don't have a great deal of money, so what I have needs to count.

I don't think looking after my own survival qualifies as being against organized labor. I blame the execs and engineering teams at the American car makers for not developing a good product (for my needs) and leaning on the unions.

8. Loving our new Ford Focus
Edited on Mon Sep-14-09 07:57 AM by texastoast
I hope the American automakers have figured out that we want quality, dependability, good mileage, and longevity. And the corporate bastards who think we don't, just understand that we are a fickle bunch and will go find it elsewhere if need be. Based on some friends' purchase of the Focus from several years ago, and on the longevity of our old Ford Windstar when the family and kids were much more numerous, we went with Ford again. So nice to be back in a little car.

They aren't making much on us Toyota/Honda drivers.

13. I've got 100K miles on my Oldsmobile 6 cyc SUV and took it into the shop
it needed nothing but the standard maintenance. It looks brand new and doesn't have a squeak or a rattle anywhere

Best car I've even owned and hubby's used Caddy is the same

US cars have come a long way in the last 20 years.

11. I'm currently thinking of getting a new vehicle
Edited on Mon Sep-14-09 09:01 AM by tammywammy
I have a 2006 VW Beetle TDI, but it's had it's problems over the years and now my warranty is up. I'm debating between a Ford Escape or the Mazda (partially owned by Ford) CX-7.

edited to add: My VW has been in the shop more than my previous two vehicles (a Pontiac and a Chevy) combined.

16. Impala & Malibu are on the top 20 sales list

I love my new Cobalt. It has been GM's best seller the last 2 months. You get 2 months to try any new GM. If you don't like it, you get your $ back on ANY GM: http://usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/cars-trucks/GM-60-Day-Money-Back-Guarantee/

Kicking Tires adds, "The program will run through November and does have a number of conditions, as you'd expect." It only applies to 2009 and 2010 model year vehicles. There are still some 2008 models lingering on dealer lots, but they won't be covered. The vehicle also "must be returned between 31 and 60 days from purchase," with less than 4,000 miles on its odometer. The buyer must be current on payments, and "If the purchase loan included an additional amount to pay off the loan on a trade-in above what the trade-in was worth, that portion won't be refunded."

The UAW union made list for 2009 has a few surprises: http://www.uaw.org/uawmade/auto/2009/index.cfm

Toyota is closing it's only union made US plant. 4,000 workers plus all the support people will lose jobs.

18. I'm leaning towards a small SUV
I'm a single homeowner. The Beetle is a PITA even when I buy fertilizer. I took a friend to the airport yesterday and his very large bag wouldn't fit in my trunk. My commute to work has been cut to 14 miles round trip, so I think the cut in mpg won't be too scary. I'm still debating what to do. I may try and sell my car on my own, my dad has a second vehicle I could drive after I sell mine and before I buy a new car. The upside is I'm in positive with my Beetle, so I should make a little on selling it vs my payoff amount.

15. We always bought made-in-USA union-built cars, and I have nothing but good things to say about the
Ford cars we've bought since 2001. We have a diesel F-250, a 2008 Taurus (total love), and bought our second Focus after driving the first one into the ground with no problems. The Focus is an awesome car. We're getting 35+ mpg with it.
