Screw Budweiser (Inbev), Molson and Sam Adams...DRINK LOCAL BEER!
http://articles.moneycentral.msn.com/Investing/CompanyFocus/why-every-cold-beer-costs-you-more.aspx

Read this article. Fuck these assholes. Budweiser sucks anyway. Can't believe 13 people can make $73 million from drinking pee water. Molson is OK but not that great. Some Sam Adams is good but I won't be having another. I travel for a living and never have any trouble finding a good local beer wherever I am.

1. I already do, gladly.
Nothing against Sam Adams, but my microbrewery has some fantastic brews that cost less and keep the money local. I can tell you that my brewer is really concerned with the price of hops....he thinks that there may be some market manipulation going on. Given the current market players, it wouldn't surprise me in the least.

3. I can see why you are pissed but
don't be so quick to write off Sam Adams (Boston Beer Co.) I see that their CEO appears to be another corporate fat cat but they are very generous in their support of the Dem party and progressive causes in general. Plus the beer is pretty good too.

i care about... wait for it... the beer.

sam adams does make some decent beers. i'd drink them even if they supported solely repubs, but it's nice to see they don't.

personally, i drink redhook ESB and local stuff mostly, but i do like sam adams.

yer average fresh brewpub beer is usually better than sam adams, but i think that;s almost always true of a beer that is fresh.

16. Try Three Floyds, out of Munster, IN
Delicious! One of my all-time favorite beers is from there (the Robert the Bruce Scotch Ale). They also do a one-day release/mini-beer fest for their Dark Lord Russian Imperial Stout. It's a good time.

Also, speaking of Missouri beers, have you tried Boulevard, out of Kansas City? Their Smokestack series is always interesting. I had a one of those on Election Night instead of Champagne.

THE DISPUTE: The Teamsters say the owner of D.G. Yuengling & Son threatened to close the brewery unless workers decertified the union. Yuengling says its employees got rid of the union on their own.
THE RULING: The National Labor Relations Board sided with the brewery, saying it found no evidence that Dick Yuengling Jr. pressured employees to leave the Teamsters.
THE BOYCOTT: The Teamsters, backed by the Philadelphia council of the AFL-CIO, wants members to boycott Yuengling products. But so far, the boycott appears to have fallen flat.

Fat Tire's a decent ale, but the thing I love about the microbrew industry is the variety. If you stick to the big breweries, all you get are dishwatery lagers. With microbrews, you get red ales, brown ales, pale ales, IPAs, stouts, porters, wheat beers, fruit beers, kolsches, and yes, lagers that are much better than factory beer.

Edited on Mon Sep-14-09 05:15 PM by fujiyama
I was a bit disappointed (in terms of the beer) in the quick trip I took to Seattle. Portland is definitely better. What I liked best in Portland was almost every bar had their own IPA or Stout on tap.

MI has a lot of great brews and Bells and Great Lakes are among the best out there, but it pisses me off that many bars out here don't carry them. It's almost always the usual macro-crap. I'm lucky if I even find a bar that has an IPA on tap. The state needs to do a better job encouraging places to sell the craft beers brewed here in this state. They're really good and I don't think they're getting the marketing and exposure they should be. The brew-fest in Ypsilanti was a lot of fun and showcased many of them. I agree that many could compete with the stuff in the PNW.

17. For those of us in the Republic of Cascadia, we have scores to choose from, but I want to
single out one for a special mention -- Fish Tale Organic Ales: http://www.fishbrewing.com/fish-tale-ales/

My preference is always India Pale Ales, whatever the brewery, but having the label organic added to a good brew deserves special attention.

Another is Full Sail IPA (and other brews) which is produced by an employee owned operation - http://www.fullsailbrewing.com/default.cfm

On accepting a Green Award - http://www.fullsailbrewing.com/PR%20Best%20Green%20Company%20Award.pdf
“It is truly an honor to be named one of the top green businesses in Oregon, a state that is known for being on the forefront of sustainability. 23. Really, this is what puts you over the top?
Sam Adams sold $404 million dollars worth of beer last year, and the CEO made 2.75 million dollars. Do you also boycott movies, tv shows, music and books where the artists make a lot? Beer is a non-essential product in a market with plenty of alternatives, it's not like getting gouged on gasoline where all the companies are f'ing you for a product you NEED, if a beer company manages to make a larger profit in a down economy, why shouldn't they make a little more. These guys are making a lot less than many CEO's whose companies LOST money.

I know people who work for them. They are treated VERY well. The founder is available and accessible to the employees and will tailor-make jobs for people to suit their strengths. They make a good product and shouldn't be penalized by their success by being compared to the beer Nazi's.

They make a beer called Black Phoenix and it's easily one of my favorite beers ever. They even sell t-shirts that say "drink local". :toast:

30. American businesses don't want competition...they want cartels...
Of course, this price wrangling is made easier because just three beer companies -- Anheuser-Busch, MillerCoors and Pabst Brewing -- control 95% of the U.S. beer market.

I always laugh when I hear a "capitalist" talk about competition "keeping prices low and quality high." What they really want is "no competition for higher prices and shabby products." Witness the current health-care debate.

Pathetic liars and deniers...

Imagine what the US would have been like if IBM had purchased all of the companies in the US and what you would end up with would be Stalinist USSR.

33. *Shrug* Molson's union-made, and that's important to me. For as much beer that we drink, it fits in
that common Venn-diagram space among the three circles of taste, price and union-made. Sometimes I'll splurge on something local, but Molson is like our table wine.

Edited on Mon Sep-14-09 11:36 AM by izzybeans
We have wonderful breweries all over the country. New ones are opening every year.

K and R.

"The US brewery count of 1,525 on July 31, 2009 is the highest total in 100 years. (2008 total includes breweries that closed during the year, and the July 2009 count is higher than at any time in 2008.)"

there are three breweries and two brew pubs in my city (budweiser is too, but they don't count), so i have no problem finding good, local beer. however, i do enjoy a stella artois (inbev) from time to time.

80. Redhook stuff
I used to drink the Redhook ESB, then they sold out to some big company and it lost its livelyness. Years later they started making a beer called 'Long Hammer' and I like it a lot. The little brewery in Blanco Texas makes several good brews. I like the Full Moon Rye Ale. My girlfriend tells me that's the sustainable choice. (close to the house you know)

89. $2.75M actually isn't that outrageous for a CEO of a major company
Edited on Mon Sep-14-09 05:04 PM by fujiyama
I'm not necessarily saying it's justified, but considering there are health insurance and banking executives making over $30-50M, well it's just hard to care about ~$3M.

Plus, Sam Adams has some really good brews. Their premium White Imperial and Russian Imperial Stouts were great. I bought them recently for a camping trip and was really impressed. They're kind of expensive though.

Personally I prefer microbrews, but Sam Adams aren't bad. I agree with a few others about the Pacific Northwest and microbreweries. Wow, what a variety. And many good ones. But there are some here in MI that are great. Microbreweries are definitely better than the mass marketed stuff and I've never understood why it's elitist to have decent taste in beer, especially when you're supporting local small companies!
