Kanye West causes uproar at MTV awards
Edited on Mon Sep-14-09 01:36 AM by Liberal_in_LA
video of the incident: http://mediadecoder.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/09/14/kanye-west-versus-taylor-swift-try-youtube-users-versus-viacom/

The nominees in that category included Beyoncé, for her dance anthem “Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It)” and Taylor Swift, for her ballad “You Belong With Me.” Ms. Swift, the 19-year-old country singer, was named the winner, and as she received her trophy, she began to tell the audience that she “always dreamed about what it would be like to maybe win one of these someday.”

Her reverie was interrupted by Kanye West, the hip-hop performer and provocateur, who followed Ms. Swift on stage and appeared to take her microphone. “I’m really happy for you,” he told her. “I’m going to let you finish. But Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time.”

Mr. West left the stage to boos, while Ms. Swift stood silently displaying her award. The television broadcast cut away to a wide shot of the stage, and then to a taped segment featuring the comedian Tracy Morgan.

------------------------------

Mr. West remained the evening’s villain in absentia, and each mention of his name was jeered for all the subsequent categories in which he was nominated. (Luckily for MTV and various presenters, Mr. West won no awards on Sunday night.)

Beyoncé, however, won the evening’s biggest prize, the Video of the Year award, for “Single Ladies,” and when she came on stage to accept it, she invited Ms. Swift to come back and finish her interrupted speech.

“Do you want me to try this again?” Ms. Swift asked the audience, which cheered its approval.

1. Very classy thing for Beyonce to do.
I'm sure she had to be embarrassed as hell by what Kanye did.

Edited on Mon Sep-14-09 01:48 AM by bliss_eternal
...gracious, kind and humble.... good on her.

she clearly remembers what a special moment a first award can be, and didn't want to see swift deprived. it's so nice to see someone w/good manners in this day and age. yay for beyonce (and ms. swift)!

given this isn't west's first "odd" (incredibly rude) outburst at an awards show....:eyes: i don't even know what to say about him.

mtv's page was already cracking jokes about it.
they've made a list of all his award show outbursts. so sad. he's had so many they can have a "best of."

though i'm (mildly) concerned...given his mother's untimely death.
maybe he needs some emotional help.

On many an entertainment site, the comments are getting more and more vile. "I'm tired of black racism...," etc.
Over on Free Republic, it took them about 5 posts to try to tie it to Obama.

Why can't they just accept that Kanye is just a stupid asshole and not try to turn everything into some whiny race war about ;oppressed" white people?

Kanye is booked on leno's premiere tomorrow. Watch for jay the ratings whore to milk it.

18. who can forget his katrina outburst with mike meyers
Edited on Mon Sep-14-09 02:20 AM by paulsby
the look on meyer's face is PRICELESS!

kanye is a dick. plain and simple.

the most ironic part is he was wanking about beyonce not winning best FEMALE VIDEO for "single ladies" when in fact, it turned out later, she won the BEST VIDEO (which is a bigger award obviously than best male or female) for Single Ladies.

kanye is a complete tool.

and south park totally wins for dissing kanye MONThS ago with their classic "fish sticks" episode that spent the entire episode riffing on kanye's total self-absorption.

he simply has NO class.

George W. Bush had far more to be ashamed about in those dark days than Kanye West for ignoring the script. Of course, my opinion is biased by surviving that disaster, and I'll readily admit that. Having said that, I think Kanye West has become self-absorbed in his own pride.

i was merely a horrified on-looker (of the tragic events of katrina). i believe he merely said what many were thinking (and wanted to say), during that horrible period.

calling out gw's blatant disregard for the impoverished, the elderly and people of color doesn't make him the d word in my book. sorry.

60. So if Beyonce had been skipped over altogether, would he have had more legs to stand on?
I understand he has issues with the "proper place and time," but had Beyonce not gotten the best album, and that too had gone to a white, country singer; then I don't think we would be thinking he was such an ass as much as thinking he was premature in speaking out.

As for Katrina and his outburst, everyone should have been as angry and incensed by what happened in New Orleans as he was, and it seems perhaps we still should be given the continuing BS that those folks have had to suffer through.

84. no, he would NOT have a leg to stand on
no matter who they chose, it was DIGRACEFUL what kanye did.

that beyonce won was both ironic and satisfying (although personally i think there were much better videos that could have been chosen)

but that's not the point

can we not make EVERYTHING a fucking racial issue. kanye is a dick. that's what matters. i don't give a flying fuck about his race, or beyonce's race, or taylor swift's race.

frankly, i think it's awesome that a country music crossover got best female fwiw.

and beyonce made kanye REALLY look like a dick with her class in recognizing swift.

117. not sure
who the mooreites are... michael moore fans?

but let's reverse the scenario...

assume that it was a white country artist who ran on to the stage and took the microphone from a black hip hop artist who had just one best female video, and he said "taylor swift should have won"

people would be making it a HUGE racial issue.

regardless, i think there's metric assloads of evidence that kanye is a self-absorbed dickhead. that alone is enough to explain his behavior. sure, he MIGHT be racist, but i don't make assumptions like that on scant evidence. i fear far too many people do.

Last night I blogged about this year's famous "disruption" incidents: The health care "town brawls", how pretty much every day of the Sotomayor confirmation hearings had at least one disturbance, Rep. Joe Wilson calling President Obama a liar, and now this.

This ain't the first time Kanye mouthed off before an audience, whether in studio (European Music Awards 2006) or TV (NBC's Hurricane Katrina fundraiser 2005).

34. I'm an old white lady, nonetheless, with all the racism going around these days
and the huge escalation of previously closet racism oozing out all over the news 24/7, I can sympathize with some potentially valid reasons for him to have over-reacted.

I'm not saying it was right, just that it is understandable.

Kudos to Beyonce, she went truly above and beyond.

130. Well I think perhaps he was anticipating that racism as seen all over MSM reporting these days
may have sort of gotten in his craw and he may have made an early assumption that it had hit the awards as well.

I'm not saying he behaved well, but I sure the heck wouldn't want to be a black man in America just now, I'd probably be seeing and reacting to a lot more racism both imagined and real because of all the real racism that seems to be going around, or perhaps a better term is getting exposed.

MTV needs something big to get everyone talking -- and keep them in the news.

So have Kanye do something totally outrageous, but keep it between Kanye and the producers. Which makes it just as much of an asshole-ish move.

how stupid can people be? this is so obviously staged that it should be ignored and allowed to go away

i don't know who the hell taylor swift and i doubt most people in this thread did before "the stunt"

they're all embarrassing themselves if they think we're this stupid -- but apparently most folks really ARE this stupid and have no ability to critically view entertainment "news"

that word "entertainment," folks, it actually DOES mean something

:eyes:

Really, it's all scripted. The talk shows, these award shows, the news.

Any of these so-called "incidents" are planned ahead of time. The streaker at the Oscars way back - staged. Joaquin Phoenix's Letterman appearance - staged. There's tons of examples of "infamous" moments that were obviously scripted.

even when west and this lady come back later to admit it, the masses will continue to swallow the nonsense

it's a world where "reality tv shows" have scriptwriters, yet folks still can't figure it out?

it really makes me wonder about if humanity has sufficient intelligence to deal with any real challenges, if so many of us can't even view admitted entertainment intelligently

THIS is the thing people are getting angry about? I don't mean on DU where it's a small footnote but I mean amongst the general public. Wars, genocides, millions (billions?) in poverty, a developed nation with a garbage health system, undeveloped nations with garbage health systems, AIDS, Cancer, the dangers of influenza both real and overblown, economic collapse, economic injustice, and so many other things...

..and the outrage and damning talk are reserved for the antics of THIS clown? Wonderful.
