KING OF THE HILL, hail and farewell
Edited on Mon Sep-14-09 08:53 AM by derby378
Normally, this would be a Lounge post, but I truly think last night saw the end of one of the best primetime shows on television. Mike Judge brought the series to an end in a manner that was optimistic and affirming, but still in keeping with the same low-key spirit of the overall series.

Highlight the text below if you missed the episode, but want the spoilers:

Bobby Hill finally found his niche in life as a beef inspector and judge, outperforming the local junior college.

Boomhauer's occupation has been unveiled - he's an undercover Texas Ranger.

2. I know - that was really out of character for them!
Must've been that organic beef that Hank grew so fond of a season or two ago...

3. For about ten years it was great but KOTH went over the hill the past few seasons
It was time to give the show a good whiff of Strickland propane.

I give the Simpsons a couple more years before somebody wakes up and realizes that it too has runout of gas.

4. I figured that they would have went with a better storyline or something that
tied the story together better.

Kind of like the last episode of Seinfeld. Although not the funniest episode, it was great to see all of the victims of Jerry and his friends, and then hear the judge pronounce:

I do not know how, or under what circumstances the four of you found each other, but your callous indifference and utter disregard for everything that is good and decent has rocked the very foundation upon which our society is built. I can think of nothing more fitting than for the four of youto spend a year removed from society so that you can contemplate the manner in which you have conducted yourselves.

5. I tried to come up with a few scenarios for the last episode of the series
Some of them would have tied the storylines together. But I have to admit that "To Sirloin, With Love" worked on the same unassuming level as the rest of the series.

7. Have you ever bothered to watch the show?
It's all satirical.

8. So you think the DNC was wrong to hold its most recent shindig in Austin this past weekend?
That's right, pal - Austin. Right there in Governor Goodhair's backyard. They're saying that Texas has a chance to go Democratic next year, and here you are, giving us the same ol' song and dance about how we should be ostracized.

We're here, and we're playing for keeps. We've taken back Dallas County in 2006, and we won't stop until our state legislature and our governor are all listed under the "D" column.

11. You don't watch the show, do you?
Edited on Mon Sep-14-09 11:27 AM by TexasObserver
And if you do watch, you have no idea what it's about.

Here's a clue: the same guy who wrote Beavis & Butthead, Office Space and Idiocracy wrote King of the Hill. Perhaps one day you'll outgrow your clearly inappropriate knee jerk reaction and see the show for what it is. For you, it's just another excuse to let people know how mad you are at Texas for being there.

It isn't Texans stopping progressive action by the Democratic party. It's that loser Harry Reid - the worst Democratic majority leader in the history of the party. He's the guy who has almost singlehandedly killed health care reform in America. Too bad we don't have a Senate Leader like LBJ. Then we might get real reform.

13. You know...
I can look upon India with a certain astonishment. Here's a nation with 1.2 billion people, two official languages, an economy in constant evolution, tremendous cultural and biological diversity, Bollywood, nuclear weapons, and cuisine that has transformed the world. How do these people manage to make it all work? I don't know, but they most certainly do. The same goes for Texas. Let the haters stare at us in amazement, scratching their heads. Dysfunctional as we are, we still endure.

15. Yep. It's as silly as hating California for Reagan or Prop 8.
It's as silly as hating Nevada for Reid and Ensign.

It's as silly as hating Massachusetts for Romney.

14. Mike Judge also worked for "The Critic" and produced "The Simpsons"
Doesn't mean every show he does is a carbon copy...

Some episodes had satire.

The Bush election one (2000 or 2004?) certainly did not come across as satire.

The one where LuAnn is a weather girl and stupidly wears blue in front of the camera (chromakey tied to blue which vanishes, so - on camera - it looks like she's wearing only shoulder pads whose silhouette makes it look like she's got big titties.)

Redneck humor. Not an entirely unfounded accusation either.

16. Those weren't HIS shows, however.
As for KOTH, the treatment of Bush - the horror of Hank in finding out what a weak hand shake Bush had - was strongly anti Bush.

10. "I tell you what" -- wow, I didn't know last night's was the final episode.
It was one of the best on television.

One of the best lines ever in a television series, "Dinner, like youth, is served."

I have no idea what it means, but that line, so evocative of Tennesee Williams, had me in stitches for a week.

17. This comment about the son
had my sister rolling for a long time.

I might be a mother, but I'm still a woman and I know a girl repellent when I see one. Hank, I want grandchildren. Fix this

The image of the sack of potatos like little boy is just too much. Hank's horror every time his son does something that is just not right is great.

18. I like that they tied everything up (spoilers)
Nancy appreciating Dale

Hank and Bobby finally obtaining a relationship beyond "that boy ain't right" and Bobby finding success

The whole neighborhood coming together for that last bbq

The mystery of Boomhauer

The only thing missing, was Lenore coming back to Bill.

"I haven't even had breakfast yet, and that boy ain't right." cracked me the hell up

19. I think Bill's a lot better off without Lenore
He may never find true love, he may never shake his infatuation with Peggy, and his relatives in Louisiana appear to be headed nowhere fast, but Bill's got Dale and Boomhauer as running buddies and Hank as his mentor and alpha male. So Bill has a family of sorts to lean on.

Besides, how many of us would have the patience to put with as much of Bill's misadventures as Hank has? Hank's a true friend to Bill.
