Catholic Churches Hold Special Collection to Fight Gay Marriage (ME)
Edited on Mon Sep-14-09 09:36 AM by MountainLaurel
The campaign to overturn Maine's new gay-marriage law is heating up within the Catholic Church.

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland asked parishioners to donate in a second collection on Sunday.

Church officials said they need money to help repeal the state's same-sex marriage law.

Officials said donations like the ones collected at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception will go to pay for television ads aimed at overturning the state law that legislators passed last spring.

13. No doubt.
They own hospitals and get massive subsidies on the tax-payers dime and they turn around and politicize issues with their tax-free donations.

Oh, but they are so charitable... and that excuses all their bigotry. NOT!

3. Amen
Pun intended.

They're awful close to that line between issues advocacy and being directly involved in elections.

12. They can take a stand on issues, just not on partisan matters/elections.
The IRS has consistently interpreted its rules this way. This is why the UUA and UCC can advocate FOR gay rights.

7. Shhhh ... Child rape is just fine and dandy if it's done by Holy Men.
Consenting adults loving each other, though? Why, that's just SICK!

18. The nut case Catholics over at the forums at Catholic.com
Edited on Mon Sep-14-09 01:26 PM by dflprincess
(and by nutcase I mean the ones who fear Pope Benedict may be a closet liberal and the Boston archdiocese is to be slammed for giving Ted Kennedy a Catholic funeral)

think all pedophile priests are/were homosexuals. They completely ignore questions about priests who molested girls (as did the media, but there were plenty) as well as any comments about most pedophiles/pederasts regardless of which sex they molest tend to identify themselves as heterosexuals.

I go over there now and again to reenforce my lapsed Catholic state.

11. Wonder Where the Religion Apologists Are?
You know, the ones that pop up every time some pastor or church says something evil. The ones who say "those aren't REAL christians!"

Yes, Virginia, they ARE real christians. All the money you donate to your church is put to exactly the same use as the fundies' money: to fund anti-gay, anti-women legislation.
