So the teabaggers want the government out of their lives.
In Viking-era Scandinavia, they could easily have had their way. The process was called outlawing, and the noun "outlaw" (Ütlagi) originally referred to someone who had been outlawed, i.e. placed outside the law for refusing to play by society's rules. Once you were outlawed, you had no recourse to the legal system. Anyone could, for example, kill you on sight with no legal repercussions. At the very least, we could grant them their wish and leave them out of our single-payer health care system (when we finally get one).

I've heard of worse proposals.

1. And tell 'em to stay the hell off our roads, and stop using our municipal water
and stop using our airwaves. Oh, and stop using our Internet, as well.

3. HERE YOU GO
O.E. utlaga "one put outside the law" (and thereby deprived of its benefits and protections), from O.N. utlagi (n.) "outlaw," from utlagr (adj.) "outlawed, banished," from ut "out" + *lagu, pl. of lag "law" (see law).

"if he man to deaðe gefylle, beo he þonne utlah" <"Laws of Edward & Guthrum," c.924>

The verb is from O.E. utlagian. Meaning "one living a lawless life" is first recorded 1880.

12. Unfortunately I don't have a Runic typeface handy, or I'd be happy to oblige.
You prefer the elder or younger Runes? If the latter, which style? Danish, perhaps? Or coded by Ættir? One of the Rök Stone coded styles, like maybe Fiskrunar?

Actually, I wrote a quasi-scholarly book on the runes better than 20 years ago; it's been out of print at least 15 years.

14. I think it was Eldar Futhark
and in all honesty, I was only briefly introduced to it while taking a class on Norse Mythology back in college. I had never really given much thought to the difficulties of creating a written language until I was introduced to them, though. Later, after reading the Tolkien's books, I was amazed to see all the stuff on linguistics in the appendices. I seemed like he wrote the books so he would have a reason to play with the various languages he used.

16. Probably the Elder Futhark.
That was the 24-letter version. The English added letters & the Scandinavians subtracted them. In fact, your referring to it as "FUThARK" instead of "FUThORC" would indicate that you're talking about the elder one.

Just for the hell of it, I looked up the book & saw used copies of it still kicking around on Amazon. It went through 2 printings, 20k copies in all.

5. President Bartlett put it succinctly
Once you are outside of the law you no longer have it to protect you.

On the other hand, if (when) we get single payer or some sort of health care reform those who get their "facts" from right wing radio will be first in line for services.

13. Isn't It Funny............
Isn't it funny how all these right wing mouth-breathers HATE government so much, and insist that the only thing government is good for is screwing things up, yet when they talk about the Middle East, they'll tell you that the only way to rid ourselves of the massive threat posed by Islamic extremists in Iran, Afghanistan, and (snicker, snicker) Iraq is to get rid of the religiously fanatic fringe groups and install a strong, democratic central government.

That's the thing about these hypocrites. They spout their hatred for all things Middle Eastern, yet they're striving for our country to be JUST LIKE the ones they profess to hate. They want no centralized government, they want religion to be pervasive in everything, they want the death penalty (for just about every offense imaginable), they want to shred the Bill of Rights (except for the Second Amendment, of course), and they want everybody to be armed at all times. Any one of those Middle Eastern countries would be Utopia for these people. The problem is, they'll turn right around and tell you how BAD it is over there, and how we need to go in there and take them over and show them the error of their ways. It's yet another perfect example of how they have certain standards for themselves, but completely different ones for "those people" (and "those people" consist of whoever they happen to be pointing accusatory fingers at at the time, while conveniently excluding themselves because they, of course, are beyond reproach).

18. Welcome to DU. Good points.
Bush was setting up a health care system for Iraq and they had no problem with that! Or for building schools (Sometimes they are against public schools, too).
