1. Which one? I'll be gettting the regular flu shot ASAP but I may hold back on
the H1N1 because I'm not in a risk group and don't to take someone else's shot if there is a shortage. I figure, best let the people in the risk groups get a chance to get immunized first.

2. The last time I had the flu was my undergrad years
so I don't feel the need for the shot. That is subject to change, of course.

Now, if they develop a vaccine for upper respiratory infection (allergy/sinus gunk), I'd go for that.

18. I used to have that problem
(upper respiratory infection, allergy/sinus gunk), but then I found an effective (and cheap) over-the-counter allergy medication for it and I haven't had that problem since.

3. As soon as the clinic gets both the regular flu and the H1N1
I will be getting both...

And I believe in modern medicine.

Given I have a bad cold, even if they had it on Friday I would have had to wait

7. Take the two at least three weeks apart.
Get your seasonal shot as soon as you can. Then get the H1N1 when it's available. It takes time to build the immune response.

8. I know why I will go pay for the flu locally
or go Balboa to get it, as soon as I am over the cold.

The doctor said that there should be no issue having them both at the same time

Regardless it takes anywhere from seven to ten days to build immunity with the H1N1 (yes I am in a high risk group), and three to five on the other, from CDC...

But I first need to get over the damn cold... not a good idea to get a vax when your immune system is already playing the game of kicking a bad bugger off

10. That's true, although it's really OK as long as you don't have a fever.
I've taken it on the backside of a cold. The common cold isn't really much of an illness, and the giver of the shot will shrug it off if you don't have a fever. Still, it's probably best to wait.

I used not to get them... but the last few
I run slight fevers with no fail...

Funny it started the day I had my regularly scheduled appointment... so we had to laugh.

I used not to sleep them off either...

50. 3 to 5 days? Thanks for the info; I'm heading out to San Diego on Friday and had my shot today
I'm taking Amtrak out there to join numerous cousins for the interment of my Aunt. Much of my Mom's family used to live in SD, but now are scattered to the winds. It should be a nice reunion cum celebration of Aunt Margaret's life. Anyhow I figured I'd be in contact with lots and lots of people, and might as well get the shot now....

Had to take the vaccination while I was in the military, but never before, and never since. I seem to have some sort of natural immunity.

Doubts over China's one-dose flu vaccine
Mary Ann Benitez

Friday, September 11, 2009
On the eve of the deadline for the submission of tenders for the HK$700 million contract to supply the SAR with a vaccine against the pandemic swine flu (H1N1) virus, doubts have emerged about the efficacy and safety of one of the leading bidders.

The vaccine from China's Nasdaq-listed Sinovac Biotech (also known in China as Beijing Kexing Bioproducts), is the only one that has not been trialed in the West but is the first in the world to be registered by its own regulatory agency, the State Food and Drug Administration.

I don't think Beijing Kexing Bioproducts is making vaccine for the US. What does that have to do with the science of vaccination and immune response?

20. Got mine..I work in an HIV clinic..high risk area when it comes to flu
Now..I don't know about getting the swine flu shot..still a little hesitant about that one. Just seems like it was a little rushed in getting on the market.
At least our employee health people are saying that despite the news saying that the swine flu shot is a two part shot (weeks betweent he two shots), THEY were told the two part shot has been combined into ONE shot.

Seeing as how our clinic gives out the flu shot like it is water each year, we were dreading that between the regular flu shot and the supposed two part shot we would be giving out TRIPLE the amount of flu shots from last year!! Triple. Now, at least, it will "only" be double if employee health is correct in their info!

22. I haven't had the flu since my last flu shot in 1997 or so...
I rarely got the flu before that.

I received my first flu shot and got terribly sick three days later and was in bed for two weeks.

I haven't had a flu shot since, nor have I had the flu since.

I rarely get colds either... maybe once every 10 years or so.

I have a good track record and apparently a really good immune system. I'm not going to mess with it.

53. It can give you "slight" flu-like symptoms...

That's what it said right on the waiver I signed and handed to the nurse who gave me the shot.

I could have easily been unwittingly exposed to the bug prior to the shot.

What I said, stands.

23. Warning to Medicare patients about flu shot fees
The place where I work gives out the shot to lots of Medicare patients.

Keep in mind that Medicare will only pay for one flu shot a YEAR. And that YEAR is not seen as January to January...it is as shot to shot. SO if you got last year's shot, say on Nov 1st for whatever reason, you have to wait til Nov 1st THIS year otherwise there is a good chance that YOU will get to foot the bill for that shot.
So that little ABN form that you sign before you get the shot (Advance Beneficiary Notice) is kind of important to read. It gives you three different options, one of which is basically "give me the shot, I am aware that Medicare may not pay for it, but give it to me anyway".
Most Medicare people know this but it would suck for people to misinterpret Medicare's definition of a "year".

Hope that there will be sufficient vaccine to also get the H1N1 shot when they're finished giving them to school children, health care workers etc. Particularly since the woman sitting directly opposite me at work has has a bad habit of coming to come to work sick. Two years ago literally everyone in the department who hadn't had the shot got to share her flu. No thanks. Not with this one if I can help it.

44. No. Have had the flu once in 51 years, back when swine flu went around
the first time, late 70s I think. Pretty sick from it for a few days - I remember thinking "wow, flu sucks."

I don't get many colds, and I've never taken the flu shot, so not likely to start now esp. with a rushed vaccine. If there are shots left to take and this flu becomes so virulent that a rushed vaccine is definitely the lesser of two evils, I will probably reconsider taking it. Or perhaps just a pneumovac in the hopes that should I get a secondary issue from the flu, it will lessen the effects and give me as an older person a better shot at survival.

Am in a wait and see mode.

49. I got mine today, & roped hubby in as well. Now it's my self-appointed job to remind the adult kids
... and ask the one without health insurance if she has enough money for the shot. She's pregnant and runs a pre-school; if her OB recommends the vaccination for her and if her pediatrician recommends it for her 4 y.o., paying out $25 apiece for them is not a problem for me.

The last time I really got the flu I ended up with pneumonitis as well. I decided I had relied on my own immunity long enough, and have had a flu shot every year since then.

I don't know if H1N1 vaccine will be available here later in the Fall, but I figure that if I catch H1N1 at least I won't already have been weakened by regular influenza.
