Joe Wilson (R-SC) makes me sad. And his home state, that flew the confederate battle flag over its capitol until 2000, makes me sad. Simply put, South Carolina by all accounts still seems to be one of the leading US places for racism, poverty, and ignorance. The NAACP has been boycotting the state for years. Now is the time for the rest of the US and world to act. Censure and Boycott South Carolina.
SOUTH CAROLINA: LAND OF RACISM AND POVERTY
In case you think that South Carolina is known for its pretty coastal beaches, let me give you some background:
•South Carolina was the 1st state to secede from the Union during the Civil War. Its troops fired on Fort Sumter, beginning a conflict that would ultimately cause the death of 700,000 Americans.
•Until 2000, South Carolina STILL flew the confederate battle flag over its capitol.
•South Carolina served as a cornerstone of the slave trade. In fact, Continental Congress participant Edward Rutledge from SC was the primary force behind the successful effort to have wording removed from the Declaration of Independence that condemned slavery and the slave trade.
•Jim Crowe laws were especially severe in SC
•Racism is alive and well in South Carolina. In June 2009, GOP operative Mike Green posted a racist joke about President Obama on his Twitter account. He admitted to doing this and then deleted it some time later: "Just heard Obama is going to impose a 40% tax on aspirin because it is white and it works."

The reporter, Charmayne Brown was thrown to the ground, punched, and it appears (from the video that is available online) strangled. The entire attack was caught on tape by another (white) TV crew on the scene - who did NOTHING to help Ms. Brown.

•There is more. Just google South Carolina and any word - like poverty, racism, crime, statistics, and you’ll find a wealth of information on the appalling conditions in this state.
BOYCOTT SOUTH CAROLINA
The NAACP has been boycotting South Carolina for years. Now it is time for everyone to join and support this effort. There are many things you can do:
•Don’t travel to South Carolina. If you can’t avoid driving through the state or flying through one of their airports, then don’t buy food or gas. And, don’t stay in one of their hotels.
•If you are in a position to book conferences DO NOT book them in South Carolina. In fact, following the recent outburst from Joe Wilson, the National Newspaper Publishing Association cancelled their annual conference to be held in South Carolina.
•Stop buying Nestle products, such as Lean Cuisine and Stouffers. Both products are made in South Carolina.
•Don’t buy Kimberly Clark products. They’re made in SC. Products include: Cotonelle, Depends, Goodnight, Huggies, Kleenex, Kotex, Little Swimmers, Poise, Pull-Ups, Scott Tissue Products, and Viva.
•If you are redecorating, don’t buy Mohawk carpets or Andersen Hardwood Floors. Both are made in South Carolina.
•Don’t watch the new TV show Parks and Recreation on TV. One of the actors, Aziz Ansari is from South Carolina.
•Avoid Sex and the City reruns. Kristin Davis was raised and attended college in South Carolina.
•Don’t watch Fox News (shouldn’t be too hard!) Ainsley Hayden Earhardt, a correspondent, is from SC.
•Boycott the following products: Kimberly Clark, Nestle, BMW, American LaFrance, Folbot Folding Kayaks, Honda, Bridgestone Firestone, Caterpillar, Honeywell, Michelin, Scout Boats, BASF, BP Chemical , DuPont, Eastman Chemical, Alcoa, Anderson Hardwood Floors, Bose (radios), GE, and Mohawk Carpet among others.
