Obama: Kanye Is A "Jackass"
Edited on Mon Sep-14-09 08:49 PM by democracy1st
During a CNBC interview on Monday, President Obama called hip-hop artist Kanye West a "jackass" over his behavior at the MTV Video Music Awards. (Watch video of Kanye at the VMAs here.)http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/09/13/kanye-west-steals-taylor_n_285198.html

Obama's colorful remark was actually made in an off-the-record portion of the interview that was tweeted -- and then deleted -- by ABC News reporter Terry Moran.

"Pres. Obama just called Kanye West a 'jackass' for his outburst at VMAs when Taylor Swift won. Now THAT'S presidential," Moran wrote.

Politico's Michael Calderone has ABC's statement apologizing for Moran's journalistic breach.

ABC's Moran removes tweet with Obama swipe at Kanye

ABC News reporter Terry Moran caused quite a commotion tonight on Twitter after writing the following: "Pres. Obama just called Kanye West a "jackass" for his outburst at VMAs when Taylor Swift won. Now THAT'S presidential."

Although it wasn't long before Moran removed it, with over a million followers, the tweet quickly bounced around Twitter through various users. (And it can still be found here).

Now, an ABC spokesperson explains to POLITICO what happened:

In the process of reporting on remarks by President Obama that were made during a CNBC interview, ABC News employees prematurely tweeted a portion of those remarks that turned out to be from an off-the-record portion of the interview. This was done before our editorial process had been completed. That was wrong. We apologize to the White House and CNBC and are taking steps to ensure that it will not happen again.

6. While she should never have tweeted that comment...
... Obama was right.

I like Kanye's music, but I can't defend his behavior. He acts like a jackass.

However, I did so enjoy "George Bush doesn't care about Black people." That was classic.

except Kanye's music. Meh. Medium-OK, I guess. I'm not wild about anything Jay-Z's done since The Blue Album (loved that over-the-top stuff, but there already he'd crested the peak), including bringing Kanye along in the industry. To each their own, though.

Now if he can just extend that courtesy to the Repukes, we might have some FDR stuff going on here.

Yeah, Kanye was a jackass. But he doesn't hold a candle to Grassley and his ilk.

And he betrayed the President of the United States?

38. It's a free-for-all to betray and disrespect the President. That seems to be the message.
Although, if something was going to be leaked, this one doesn't exactly hurt Obama at all.

What an asshole and Pris Terry Moran looks like for bashing the President for calling West a jackass. Everyone thinks West acted like a jackass.

41. Jackass isn't the point -
the point is that someone - anyone - said something off the record.

Ask any reputable journalist. "Off the record" is sacrosanct. You do NOT violate it, not ever.

Moran is an abomination, a disgrace, and should be fired immediately for this most egregious and unprofessional act.....................

43. This is going to backfire immensely for conservative media like Moran
Kanye West has turned into the Devil for all of these country fans that worship Taylor Swift. With Obama coming out stronger against Kanye than practically any other well-known person in this country, they'll have to at least admit that the man isn't that bad after all. Who knows, it might even buy him a few votes amongst the more hardcore pro-Taylor Swift, anti-Kanye folks that know little about the issues.

21. abc fuckup #1 - moran tweets off-the-record quote. abc fuckup #2 - abc spokesperson CONFIRMS quote
it's one thing for an errant reporter to fuck up and quote some off-the-record material.

it's another thing entirely for a media outlet to carefully, thoughtfully "apologize" and in the process CONFIRM the off-the-record material.

the proper thing to do was to say that the quote could not be verified, could not be confirmed, was the result of a miscommunication or misunderstanding, something, ANYTHING but to simply confirm that obama actually said it.

abc has simply dug itself a much deeper hole.

with the "Obama's comments on Kanye are another move in a chess game so impossibly complicated we mere mortals could never comprehend" people going toe-to-toe with the "Obama has no right to opine on Kanye's behavior until he's signed a single-payer health care bill" crowd.

Edited on Mon Sep-14-09 09:15 PM by Selatius
I figure it would either be a company like Disney that would fuck-up in such a way that makes Obama look bad or FOX News.

Guess we now know which company screwed the pooch first on that one.

I don't care who Kanye West is. I'm not really interested in finding out.

I don't know if he deserved to be called a "jackass," or not. I don't care.

I don't like Obama's politics.

But it doesn't bother me a bit for him to call someone a "jackass" when speaking off the record.

"jackass?" Not even a molehill.

Health care? A mountain.

Education? Mount Everest.

Is this really going to obsess people, to take up time and energy, for the next week?

36. Extremely unethical of Moran...
On a sidenote, I don't like that feature of Twitter, that you can delete individual posts--I've never once used it, and it seems weaselly to me. You take responsibility for what you say; you take yoir lumps like a big boy or girl; and you don't try to erase the record. Though in this case, Moran's Tweet has been recorded forever.
