You lie! Wilson shouts; tourists stay out?
WASHINGTON — S.C. and local tourism officials say they are being flooded by e-mails and calls from people across the country, saying they won’t vacation in the Palmetto State because they’re upset by U.S. Rep. Joe Wilson’s outburst at President Barack Obama.

A number of the out-of-state e-mailers have said they have taken beach trips for years in Myrtle Beach, Hilton Head and other resort areas but don’t plan to return, officials said.

In Washington, House Democratic leaders Monday finalized a measure reprimanding Wilson, a Lexington County Republican, for yelling “You lie!” at Obama last week while the president was addressing a joint session of Congress.
<snip>
Marion Edmonds, a spokesman for the S.C. Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism, said that agency had received 147 e-mails from people who cited Wilson by name and expressed displeasure with his shout-out.

“Some of them have been specific and said they won’t be coming to the beach this summer for their family vacation,” Edmonds said. “There are some that mention Myrtle Beach. There are some that mention North Myrtle Beach. There are some that mention Charleston. There are some that mention Hilton Head.”

Late Monday, Clyburn said Wilson’s actions “have ramifications far beyond the halls of Congress. ... His outburst and failure to acknowledge his mistake on the floor of the House will end up costing his district and our state jobs.”

Bill Miles, chief executive of the Hilton Head-Bluffton Chamber of Commerce, said his group had received dozens of e-mails and phone calls from people protesting Wilson’s outburst.

I really hate this because the state needs the revenue, but keep those emails and phone calls coming!!

It is one of the only ways to exert pressure on him and his ilk. Jackass!

1. It is a shame when a whole state has to suffer because of one fool.
One should think before yelling.

4. The state has Democrats.
They didn't vote for him.

Every state has elected assholes, every single one.

5. I *wish* people would boycott Georgia, because of our a-hole reps
People putting SC on notice is a GOOD thing, especially if that little fact hits the news, because then perhaps these local buffoons will do some thinking before they vote the next time.

Hit em where they live -- especially with this Wilson joker trying his best to be a martyr.

7. Do we tally them up now?
Our fools have been in the news one after the other. There are other places that have a fair share of idiots.

It is very convenient and comfortable to point at SC as the "worst" whatever. That makes it much easier to avoid

looking at what is in your own backyard.

I have never denied the ugliness that resides in this state. It has to be rooted out, and I do mean rooted. There

are many decent people here who keep working at it.

I started this thread as an acknowledgement of what needs to happen to drive some points home. It will hurt this

state, but it needs to be done. It feels like calling in mortar fire on your own home in hopes that the pinheads

will be driven back. You hope that there will be decent people left to rebuild.

We all might get blowed up as we say down here. I'm sure that would make some people happy.

8. No. There is no SC tally, but it’s kind of unavoidable when it’s in my face over and over again.
Good on you for living there. My parents retired in GA which is more or less the same thing, just different clowns when the stage appears.

Carry on.

Peace.

18. It's not one fool. Not just one, by any means.
People can vacation in many places. Why should they ignore the political climate of a state when selecting a vacation spot? I certainly don't. SC has been off my list for years. TX, AL, ND, WY, and MS are also on that list of states not to be considered.

Why? Politics, plain and simple. I have no interest in spending my money in states where right-wingers are regularly elected by a majority of the citizens there.

It's my vacation budget, so it's my choice.

6. Yes, hit them where it counts - in the pocket-book and SC may shed their crazy wingnut
representatives. Well, we can HOPE, can't we? ;)

9. Even if it had no impact whatsoever, I think people should have their
say, if they chose to do so. It would be nice to know that folks object to Wilson's behaviour have taken the time to let officials in SC know of their displeasure.

He had his say (and seems continue to do so).

Now, perhaps it is time for the public to have their say as well.

I am not traveling to SC this year (have in the past), but my plans were to the NE this year, so I guess in a very extended sense, I am "not vacationing" in SC this year, nor probably in the future. The reasons are different, but the effects the same.

10. I'm not arguing that point.
I agree.

Hopefully, something will get through to some of these loons.

They know how I feel.

12. He is no more going to resign than Sanford.
A sincere apology would be welcome. However, he's going to become a martyr for the fleabaggers. In actuality, he is

a disgrace because he has no manners, and he is an idiot.

16. If he hurts SC's pocket book, he may be asked to step down. Republicans don't like
being seperated from their money.

14. Sadly he won't care. And low-wage workers in his district will pay first.
That's what sucks about putting an embargo onto a dictatorship.

15. My mom lives in NOrth Charleston
She is over 80 years old. I am retired and would like to help her out as she says she want to sell her home and move back to NJ where she lived until she retired with my Dad who died in 2000.

I find myself feeling a bit of fear to go to South Carolina and do this for her. I am not a racist, although I think my Mom is and my brother in NJ definitely lives.

I can remember traveling in SC in 1968 and all the trucks with rifles on racks . It doesn't seem to have changed.

Living in Canada is so peaceful and wonderful. I love my health care here. I love the genuine acceptance here of different nationalities.
