Steele: Wilson Made “Terrible Error,” But House Shouldn’t Condemn It
Oh, this is rich. Steele's calling Dems hypocrites? He needs to take a long look in the mirror.

Steele: Wilson Made “Terrible Error,” But House Shouldn’t Condemn It

RNC chair Michael Steele is out with a new statement that splits the “you lie” baby, acknowledging Joe Wilson’s outburst was a “terrible error in judgment,” while simultaneously bashing House Dems for pursuing a vote to condemn it:

“In another stunning example of hypocrisy, Congressional Democrats are wasting taxpayers’ time and resources on a legislative measure to censure Congressman Joe Wilson so they don’t have to talk about their exceedingly unpopular health care plan. Without question, Joe Wilson made a terrible error in judgment and has wasted no time in extending a personal apology to the president. The president has accepted his apology…

“Democrats don’t want an apology. They want a side show — something to shift the focus away from their government-run experiment on health care.”

In a sense this reflects the built-in tensions of Steele’s role as party chair: He knows that Wilson’s outburst reinforces the image of the GOP as angry and unremittingly hostile to Obama and his agenda, so he acknowledges Wilson’s “terrible error.” But the GOP base is rallying behind Wilson — hence Steele’s attack on the Dems’ censure vote.

What’s interesting is that Steele is free to split the “you lie” baby because he won’t have to vote on the resolution. House GOPers, by contrast, will be forced to go on record either voting for or voting against a resolution — no middle ground — that condemns Wilson for displaying crude, angry, and hostile disrespect for the commander in chief.

2. Does anybody even listen to anything Steele says? My sense is that he's an
embarrassment to the Reps. But maybe in comparison to Wilson, he ain't lookin' so bad...

3. Did he complain when Congress wasted its time and money condemning MoveOn
for their General Petraeus ad?

Congress wastes its time on meaningless resolutions all the time.
