Beer (hops) in danger from global climate change
From the Environmental News Network (http://www.enn.com/top_stories/article/40478)

In a paper recently published in the Journal of Agricultural and Forest Meteorology, a team led by climatologist Martin Mozny of the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute has found that the quality of Saaz hops -- a delicate variety of hop used to make pilsner lager -- has been decreasing in recent years. Why? It would appear the continuing rise of air temperature in the Czech Republic (where the crops are located) is the culprit.

2. I think this is saying no pilsner more than it is saying no beer in general.
Fact is you can make beer from a lot of grains but not exactly the kind of beer Americans (or Czechs or Poles) are used to drinking.

14. Are there any hops in Bud?
Bud-drinkers are only threatened if rice production is threatened.

17. Budweiser is, at least nominally, a pilsner. Pilsners all contain hops.
Then again, Budweiser is a shitty beer, so if only shitty hops are left after global warming does its damage, maybe they'll be all right...

22. I love the Miller Lite ads where they say their product is "triple hopped".
So, that means they use, like, 3 hops in the beer? I mean *three actual hop flowers*. 'Cuz you sure can't taste anything other than some stale corn sugars....

12. Beer existed long before the use of hops and it will exist long after.
Edited on Tue Sep-15-09 04:42 PM by arbusto_baboso
Hops were originally intended more as a preservative than a flavoring agent. With modern refrigeration, hops are only necessary for flavor, and a skillful brewer can reproduce hop-like flavors with any range of ingredients. I should know, because I do it myself.

15. In England, 1524 to be exact....
...it happened that divers things were newly brought into England, whereupon this Rime was made: ‘Turkes, Carps, Hoppes, Piccarell, and Beere, Came into England all in one yeere.’ Sir Richard Baker, Chronicle of the Kings of England from the Time of the Romans' Government unto the Death of King James

18. But the Belgians and Czechs were using hops before that.
There's some evidence that the monks at Weihenstephan in Germany were using hops long about 1040.

16. haven't heard anything related to washington state hops
that's where most of Murka's hops come from.

IMHO, if anything, less hops could only improve the flavor of Murkin microbrews.

25. really? to me, they all are over-hopped
it's all i can taste (i had a red hook at the mariner's game last night, and sure enough, too many hops), versus the refined flavor of a belgian-style ale.
