Helsinki tackles rabbit menace by feeding them to the lions
The Finnish capital of Helsinki is to tackle the growing nuisance of the city's exploding wild rabbit population by feeding them to the residents of the local zoo, an veterinary official said Tuesday.

Local authorities estimate there are some 10,000 wild rabbits roaming the streets of Helsinki which have been charged with causing thousands of euros (dollars) of damage to the city's gardens.

In a bid to halt the floppy-eared fiends' assault on the capital's green spaces, city hall called in licensed hunters to cull their numbers.

Helsinki Zoo veterinarian Eeva Rudbaeck told AFP it was the hunters who had the idea to offer the rabbits to them.

"The hunters contacted me in the spring and asked if it would be possible to deliver them to the zoo and I said that of course, as we currently are importing rabbit meat," she said.

1. Is there controversy in this?
If they're feeding the animals rabbit meat anyway, aren't they just cutting down on the added pollution of importing them?

2. Rabbit is delicious...
... even if the dressed carcass looks like a flayed baby.

"Where's my Hasenpfeffer? I want my Hasenpfeffer!"

3. It gets old three times a day
no matter what you do to it to try to dress it up and disguise it.

The zoo is the perfect solution. It's much better than the local landfill.

11. years ago I watched a crew at the St Louis Zoo
feed two live rabbits to a twenty ft. anaconda snake. They told the crowd that they fed the snake two live rabbits to the snake every six month. Someone asked why live. The Zoo employee said that they had orginially tried dead rabbits, but the snake would regurgitate them.

6. Taste like chicken?
I had to laugh. At the Door County, WI fair this summer I once again visited the tent of the "meat rabbits." Evidently, there are meat rabbits (meant for slaughter I presume, for human consumption) and the other rabbits. These were competition type events, typical of county fairs in counties with rural populations. Nobody was out protesting. I was a bit taken aback but it was no big deal to anyone else, so I concluded that this is a way of life and that is that.
