From NBC's Mark Murray
In an interview with NBC's Brian Williams, former Democratic President Jimmy Carter attributed much of the conservative opposition that President Obama is receiving to the issue of race.

"I think an overwhelming portion of the intensely demonstrated animosity toward President Barack Obama is based on the fact that he is a black man," Carter said. "I live in the South, and I've seen the South come a long way, and I've seen the rest of the country that share the South's attitude toward minority groups at that time, particularly African Americans."

Carter continued, "And that racism inclination still exists. And I think it's bubbled up to the surface because of the belief among many white people, not just in the South but around the country, that African-Americans are not qualified to lead this great country. It's an abominable circumstance, and it grieves me and concerns me very deeply."
---------------

I love Jimmy Carter!!

11. No problem
and now my story about Carter...

He was working on a project for Habitat for Humanity in TJ.

We got the emergency call of a collapse, we didn't know who or what was... we just responded.

To make a long story short, we did transport a patient to the hospital, an American Volunteer, and he insisted on riding. Realize this is a rickety ambulance... he insisted.

Well after dealing with the media... they KNEW they had THE STORY... and telling them that the kid had a right to privacy, so buzz off... we spent three hours drinking coffee, having some down to earth tortillas, chili peppers and black beans for lunch, and talking history.

Realize at the time I wasn't a citizen... just an immigrant. He was surprised why I did this, and pleased... and I learned a lot about history, and the man.

Oh and the kid... we ended up transporting to US Hospital, and he talked with their parents, as well as me, after doing patient transport.

It was the most fascinating three hours of my life, and yes my boss INSISTED I stay with our distinguished guest, so unless the city fell apart there was not going to be any interruptions, beyond arranging the transport, and making sure patient was stable for transport.

That will be a memory I will carry to my grave and why I do give to Habitat every year...

Oh and three miles island, that was one thing that made him laugh. You know why? They tried to brief him like if he was a neub. Well he was a submariner, and worked on a reactor, so corrected the briefers on that, and they did do the right thing and briefed him as he knew.

So this does not shock me or surprise me. This is pure Carter.

I hope and want to think that a few more people of depth, especially in the South, will now stop and think. Rec.
