I don't think it is an overwhelming amount of the objection to Obama is racist but a portion is.

Being Black in America is tough. Part of it is finessing the passion of the racist, I've done it, all of us have. The way you have to do it is by doing your job well and by well I mean 1000% better than a white person and not calling attention to the racism.

I'm pretty sure Obmama winced a bit after he heard about Carter's comments.

It was terribly timing on Carter's part. I cringed when I heard it. Obama is scheduled on all the talk shows this week-end so he can push health care reform and now all they will want to talk about is Jimmy Carter's comments. It is also true that every time "race" comes to the forefront Obama drops in his approval ratings. People are uncomfortable with the issue and they become negative. We need to talk about racism but the reality of the situation is that the timing for Obama was terrible.

Obama can certainly keep his TV appearances focused on health care reform; he's the Big Cheese and doesn't need to talk about what the Talking Heads want to push as their latest offensive offensive.

The fact is that if Carter hadn't said what he did, those same Talking Heads would have found something else to take the emphasis off health care. The MSM are NOT "friends" to progressives, nor are they friendly to health care reform. Carter simply named the nasty elephant in the room and because HE said it, that nasty elephant is now out there for everyone to see, not only in the US but globally because Carter has a lot of prestige in the international sphere.

No wonder the Rethugs are scrambling frantically for cover.

But that doesn't mean that truth shouldn't be spoken. In fact, it means that there is a greater responsibility for us all to insist on learning and speaking the truth. We will generally not get it from the MSM.
Interestingly, the Newseum in Washington, DC, where I visited this summer while I was in the area, actually has a (quite small) statement in one of the exhibits to the effect that he who owns and controls the presses makes and writes the news. They even admit it! Even NPR and PBS have been infested with Bush RW appointees, so while they are better than most, they are not as good as they once were.
If Carter hadn't made this statement, which is the truth, the MSM would have seized upon something much more trivial to distract and divert from the health care debate. Their principal technique IS distraction.
So let's at least get them talking about something that is not trivial.

The racism isn't expressed in overt terms in a lot of cases. These people don't swing nooses, wear hoods and sheets,
and use pejorative terms such as n***** in public. They are more savvy about the press and how it looks or at least
the people who lead them are. These coarse expressions are for use where the cameras aren't running.

Now these people have moved to disguise their bigotry. They are using indirect methods, but it is heard. They are
dog-whistling to a certain audience. They do not believe that an African American can run the country. They also
don't believe he will even-handed. They are scared to death that he is really going to use the power of his office to
strike back at white people, and redress years of inequality.

Why do they believe this? They believe it because they know that when whites have held the governmental reins, they have enacted unfair measures against minorities. Every measure taken by the Obama administration is seen through this lens of fear. The policies can't possibly be enacted to help the entire nation. They are really going to strike at them.

The South has come a long way. The people who are racist are less in number. However, they are louder now so the change isn't evident. To deny that there has been change is to denigrate those who have changed and broken with the past. There is still much work to be done, but people do keep pushing against the bigotry.

While the South is home to more people of this ilk, Carter was right to point out that it is evident everywhere. It behooves all of us to recognize it in other areas and call it out. Otherwise, it will flourish and grow in other places that aren't so obvious.

Am I racist? I have asked myself this a lot over the years. I grew up in SC, and I think I had to have absorbed some of the worst traits. However, I try to be aware of my actions and catch myself and think about what I really may be doing. I thank my parents deeply for not crippling me with virulent racism. The worst of it wasn't approved of when I was growing up.

I remember shopping at Belk's department store with my mother when I was little. The water fountains had signs above them that said "Coloreds only" and "White's only." I always went to the one marked "Colored." I was sadly disappointed when the water wasn't red, blue, and green. I was vexed by that, and it didn't dawn on me for a long time what was really meant. I was always thinking differently I guess.

I remember the days when a 'colored' wasn't welcome in my hometown of about 1100 or so lost souls. I remember it well when I was in high school and working at a gas station when one day a black family stopped to buy gas and use the bathroom and the owner, my boss, came out from behind his desk with a look on his face like I hadn't seen before ranting and raving telling the family to move on down the road, pointing toward the west where about 12 miles or so you come to the town where I reside today telling them there's a bunch of you son'a'bitches over there. That moment is etched in my brain to be relived by me many times over. Thankfully we lived far enough out in the country that I didn't go to town much so I wasn't exposed to this kind of behavior much. My parents may have been dirt poor but they were never racist towards anyone.
