Senatwhore Shelby on MSNBC
"We's GOT to get the inspector general to investigate ACORN. The level of corruption there is unbelievable. "

"What about other groups that may also be corrupt?"

"Well, when we take care of this problem, then maybe we can look into that. But a group that registers minorities and poor peoples to vote, well, that's jest wrong. It's unfair, and it's corrupt. ACORN is the real problem, cause all them minorities and coloreds. Can you imagine if they were actually all allowed to vote? Heck fire. That's jest wrong, really wrong."

You could see that SOB smiling and grinning, barely able to contain himself, after a conservative group spent a great deal of time and money, organizing a national effort to discredit ACORN. Their illegal wiretaps and creative editing changed humor and innocent exchanges into something that appeared far worse. The hidden cameras make the story that much more believable.

Here's an example:

REAL CONVERSATION A:

A: So what are you folks looking for?
C: A home. A roof over our head. Bed rooms. A yard. A place to work.
A: What do you do?
C: RIght now, I'm looking. It hasn't gotten so bad, that I got to work on my back. Hooking. But if things get any worse. I do have some friend, who are working for cash. They want to help.
A: Well that's all right. We are here to help.
C: What do we do with cash? I mean, I just don't trust banks anymore. Not after what Wall Street did. Wiped out my sister in law, and her husbands a doctor. They got nothing left.
A: Well, I'd put it in a can and bury it in the back yard, if you know what I mean. I agree. Can't trust banks.

EDITED CONVERSATION A:

A: So what are you folks looking for?
C: Bed rooms, a place to work.
A: What do you do?
C: RIght now, t I got to work on my back. Hooking. I do have some friend, who are working for cash. They want to help.

A: Well, I'd put it in a can and bury it in the back yard, if you know what I mean.

I've heard complaints that the whole thing was a set up, but frankly, even if it wasn't edited for content, the idea that FOUR groups with hidden video would go and break the law should be a source of complaint. Unfortunately, the ends have justified the means, meaning that the census, future voting registration, and other community efforts are already the loser. The census is the key. If the birthers and religious reich can impact the numbers for ten years, inflating their size, minimizing liberals, people of color, and the poor, that has profound impact for a generation.

This should be a wake-up call to us all. The GOP is trying to hijack the census, or at least impact its results.
