Baucus bent himself into a pretzel, ostensibly to garner the coveted "bipartisan" support so beloved by David Broder. Yet not one Republican will vote for his bill. Unless Baucus is the Senator from Big Pharma instead of a Senator from Montana, his efforts have been completely wasted.
Assuming Baucus still cares about the votes of Montanans, here's a bit of free advice: Quit negotiating with people who won't negotiate. The Republican position to anything you propose is "no." There's no room for maneuvering or horse-trading or anything. You'll only be bidding against yourself. Quit it. Write a bill that with a robust public option that enlarges coverage for millions. The Republicans are going to yammer anyway; might as well get a good, progressive bill out of it.
