I hope he's getting more than cake, gifts and jersey... like a good hourly wage and retirement benefits

Man honored for 50 years of service at McDonald's

Monday, September 14, 2009

(09-14) 18:05 PDT Crestwood, Mo. (AP) --

A 68-year-old man who still works at the first McDonald's restaurant in Missouri has been honored for 50 years of service. Leonard Rhomberg began his job at a McDonald's restaurant in the St. Louis suburb of Crestwood in 1959, the year after it opened. And he still works there five days a week.

KSDK-TV reports that the restaurant's owners, Patrick and Tom Hillmeyer, thanked Rhomberg on Wednesday with a cake, gifts and a St. Louis Cardinals jersey.

He is said to refer to himself as the clean up man at the joint and therefore had to clean up all the mess that was left behind of the party that was held in his honor last week.

1. 50 years at mcdonalds?
Can someone please stick a sharp needle under my fingernail to take away the pain that thought causes me?

2. He's there 50 years and "the restaurant's owners" are thanking him?
He should be owning the joint.

4. Good for him - nothing wrong with decent work. Wish they would have
cleaned up the party mess instead of having him do it though - kind of ironic.

Hey, the guy got a free cake, on the house, fer cryin' out loud!
The owners didn't owe him a thing except a paycheck, however measly that was.

You think 50 years at McDonald's is decent work? Consider what kind of health care plan, retirement plan and benefits he has. I am sure it is damn near nothing. This is a sad story. It didn't say, but the only way I would say good for him is if he was developmentally disabled.

9. Lots of reasons he may have stayed there 50 years - maybe he was

developmentally disabled, maybe he had very low needs/wants and liked living simply (voluntary simplicity/ H.D. Thoreau), maybe he liked working there. Anyone who stays at one job for 50 years at least shows that he/she was "sicktoitivness". I think it is appalling that people want to make fun of this guy without knowing more.

10. I am not making fun, I am pitying him.
I bet he is still paid shit and has little to no benefits. He has been used for 50 years. It is a sad story.

6. He had to clean up the mess?
He would likely have been more appreciative if they had given him a retirement plan...
