Ohio police: Woman spanked stranger's toddler son

Wednesday, September 16, 2009

(09-16) 13:28 PDT CINCINNATI (AP) --

A woman took a stranger's toddler son over her knee and spanked him three times inside a Salvation Army store after he said something that annoyed her, police said Wednesday.

Gloria Ballard was arrested on an assault charge in the Tuesday incident. In a court appearance Wednesday, she asked for a public defender and a not guilty plea was entered for her. She was also ordered to stay away from 2-year-old Sean Goode and his mother, Donnay Jones.

Outside court, Ballard denied wrongdoing and said she gave the boy a hug and gently patted his backside because he was upset.

Jones said her son got spanked after Ballard told her she should make him behave.

"She was basically trying to tell me what to do with my son," Jones told WLWT-TV. She told Ballard she would handle her own business and son. Then, she said, Ballard took Sean from her and spanked him, causing him to cry.

1. WTF is up with people thinking they can hurt other people's kids?
Where is the common sense, decency, personal boundaries?
If the teachers of my kids cannot touch my kids, why would strangers be able to? Weird people.

2. Where do people get off handling other people's kids this way?
I would have scratched her eyes out over something like that.

14. read the posts on du alone, how children are viewed the so many, too many adults eyes.
comments like i smile when i see a kids spanked

sure he deserved it

kids should not be seen or heard

we are a very intolerant society today, and the little ones are the easiest to take it out on.

4. I think she ought to cool her jets in jail for a few days...
This absolutely IS assault. Geebus. Probably a hate-filled tea-bagger...

5. One question - What is a toddler doing running loose in a store?
When shopping, I always kept my toddlers in a cart or otherwise confined to keep them from running loose in a store. If nothing else but for their own safety.

7. I certainly don't condone the mother's lack of attention....
Edited on Wed Sep-16-09 07:05 PM by hlthe2b
But how is that germane to a total stranger spanking the child? You hopefully are not condoning that...

9. Jesus Christ!!!! Why do some of you people always want to start an argument?
Did I say I was condoning those people who spank other people's children.

I'm merely stating that for a toddler's safety she/he should kept from running loose in a store. Better than having them flattened by a customer's grocery cart!!!

8. Of course I don't condone people spanking strangers' children--
but in this day and age it is best to keep one's toddler in one's shopping cart or otherwise confined as the previous poster noted. I mean, nowadays you have to watch out for child abductors, molesters, etc. When I was a smaller kid in the 60's (4-5 or so) my parents allowed me to wander the store as long as I didn't talk to strangers. Those days are long in the past.

11. The issue at hand is
a perfect stranger taking it upon herself to physically handle, and in fact spank the child against the protestations of the child's own mother is the issue. While I am always among those advocating emphatically for parental responsibility on these threads, that is not at all the issue here To make it so, seems to suggest the stranger's action was somehow appropriate because the mother let the toddler wander. I know you didn't mean to imply that, but realize that is the implication.

13. Nothing the in article says the child was running loose
From the article and quoted in the OP: "Then, she said, Ballard took Sean from her and spanked him, causing him to cry."

That sounds as though the mother was holding the child.

6. My sister (14-years older than I)
When younger, went to the local grocery store and passed a car with a kid in it alone, cursing at everyone who walked by (small town - you could leave your kids in the car back then). He was probably 5 at the time. She made the offhand remark to him that someone needed to wash his mouth with soap. When she came out, his mother confronted my sister about threatening her child and started to try and instigate a fight with her (which would have been a mistake for that woman). Finally, after not getting anywhere with her, she went across the street to the police (my sister followed), and they filled out reports on each other. I thought that was kind of a disappointing end considering my 5'2" sister has pulled taller and much larger women out through car windows and slammed them up against the car hood to get back her stolen purse, but I guess it showed she had matured. Still a favorite family story though because the woman was a well-known witch who thought her husband's position at the bank made her special, and her son did grow up to be a greasy little punk.

10. I was at the grocery store with my small children one day, and saw

a small hand reach for a candy bar. I automaticly slapped the hand, then realized it was not my child. I apoligize to the mother, but she just laughed and thanked me.

I know it doesn't have anything to do with the OP, it just reminded me of that story.

people tell me what a good parent i am. back in the days, it would be a given, parenting. now a days if you actually parent a child you get a pat on the back

odd odd world

some things should just be expected, a given.
