RNC Chairman Michael Steele, the Republican Party's most prominent African American official, has issued a press release criticizing former President Jimmy Carter for arguing that much of the opposition that President Obama is facing is due to race.

Steele:

"President Carter is flat out wrong. This isn't about race. It is about policy. This is a pathetic distraction by Democrats to shift attention away from the president's wildly unpopular government-run health care plan that the American people simply oppose. Injecting race into the debate over critical issues facing American families doesn't create jobs, reform our health care system or reduce the growing deficit. It only divides Americans rather than uniting us to find solutions to challenges facing our nation.

Characterizing Americans' disapproval of President Obama's policies as being based on race is an outrage and a troubling sign about the lengths Democrats will go to disparage all who disagree with them. Playing the race card shows that Democrats are willing to deal from the bottom of the deck. Our political system has no place for this type of rhetoric. As the leader of the Democratic Party President Obama should flatly reject efforts by those in his Party, including Jimmy Carter and Tim Kaine, to inject race into our civil discourse in ways that divide, not unite, Americans."

When First Read asked the RNC how DNC Chairman Tim Kaine was injecting race into the discussion, it provided as evidence this Politico clipping, which explicitly says that Kaine DIDN'T bring up race.

"Virginia Governor and Democratic National Committee Chairman Tim Kaine used a speech Friday to single out those conservative critics whose hostility toward President Obama goes deeper than just opposing his policies — but without mentioning that which many in his party believe drives the anger. 'Republican leaders…rose up to say that he did not deserve honorary degrees from colleges that were giving him degrees last spring, members of Congress, Republican members of Congress, are spreading bogus rumors about where the president was born, and they whipped up opposition all across this country when President Obama wanted to give a speech to our nation’s schoolchildren to tell them to take responsibility, study hard and stay in school,” Kaine said here at the party’s fall meeting.'"

"He demurred when asked later whether this often-personal criticism is rooted in contempt for a president who happens to be black."

We all know, or should know, what's going on here. The right wing media blowhards—the men who run the GOP's racist rump—are going to crank up the paranoid, race-baiting rhetoric until they succeed in pushing a deranged "patriot" over the edge and an attempt is made on the life of President Barack Hussein Socialist Hitler Racist Obama. If the assassination attempt is a success—God fucking forbid—the right wing will have succeeded in removing Obama from office by... what's that phrase again... oh, right: by any means necessary. And the country will be consumed by riots, which will have racial overtones, which the right-wing will point to as proof that they were right: black people, from the dead president on down, are dangerous and violent and coming to get you, white America! The GOP may benefit at the ballot box—because they're the law and order party, the "daddy party"—so why wouldn't these immoral fuckers go for it?

Getting the president killed is a win-win scenario for the Limbaughs, Drudges, Becks, Bachmanns, etc. Let's stop pretending that it's not what they're after.

Politician won’t apologize for Obama hunting tags remark

BOISE, Idaho — Idaho Republican Rex Rammell said Tuesday the hoopla over his remarks about hunting President Barack Obama has been a boon to his campaign, and he again refused to apologize for what he called a joke.

But Rammell said the publicity has been good for his run for office.

“Hopefully, if there’s people in Idaho that didn’t know me, then they’ll know me now. I think I’ll come out of this much better off,” Rammell told the Rexburg Standard Journal in eastern Idaho, where he lives.

Hatred by the far right of Obama is not hidden in rallies

Quick post on the "we don't hate Obama, really" teabag/ 9/11 rallies. How do I say this, have they gone beyond nuts? Here are some of the signs at a 9/11 rally.

A sign with the mustache of Adolf Hitler imposed on Obama.

A sign that said, "Traitors Terrorists Run our government."

A sign that said, "Don't blame me, I voted for The 'American."

One that read, "Obama Bin Lyin."

Heck, at lest I should be happy that they didn't compare President Obama to Charles Manson or Jeffrey Dahmer. At least not yet.

The rightwing states that these rallies are about taxes and 9/11 but they end up about hating Obama. Strange, the right after 9/11 said we had to get behind the president and now the point that they take away from these rallies is to say Obama is an illegal alien. On one hand Obama is a marxist commie socialist ruskie and the next he is a bomb throwing Muslim who wants to impose Islamic law. What's next, Obama is a monarchist? Wait, I think they have said that one too. It's hard to do parody when the other side is actively engaged in doing that to their movement. I don't believe that opposition to Obama makes one a racist but if a person calls Obama a Muslim it is sometimes (though not all) code words for racism. Muslim means different (and that is the worst sin among the far right) and different is bad according to them.

How many white, middle-aged, overweight, pissed-off right-wingers does it take to unscrew a light bulb?

Depends on who you ask.

Organizers for this past weekend's anti-Obama protest in Washington, DC, were slinging around crowd-size estimates of two million people before the curtain was thankfully drawn on the thing, despite the fact that the number was actually in the tens of thousands. They were in the nation's capitol, so they said, to protest against too much governmental control over the lives of Americans, to protest taxation in general, to screech about birth certificates, to denounce President Obama and to see and be seen amid a throng of fat, white people who look just like them.

Call it a group hug for the demonstrably deranged. But there was more to it than just standard-issue anti-Obama sentiments being aired in the streets. Layered beneath the whole scene was a hard vein of bitter racism the participants didn't even try to hide.

"Packs of taxpayer marchers shuffled down Pennsylvania Avenue proudly waving signs," wrote author and political analyst Earl Ofari Hutchinson. "'The Long Legged Mack Daddy,' 'Where's the Birth Certificate,' 'Mississippi Freedom Riders,' 'Whoa Boys Take it from Here' (Obama waving to black and Islamic militants). Many defiantly waved Confederate flags and the Texas state flag (separatist movement emblem). Meanwhile, South Carolina senator Jim DeMint, Congresspersons Mike Pence, Phil Gingrey and Marsha Blackburn, and organizer mouthpiece scandal-plagued former House majority leader Dick Armey profusely swore that the march had nothing to do with race, politics, or even President Obama. The racist flags, symbols and signs, though, gave big lie to their profuse denials. Racism was on full and ugly display on the Capitol Mall. No attempt was made to mask it. Some protesters seemed quite proud to openly send a message about race and Obama."

The Agonist blog provided the following sharp analysis of the overall meaning behind the DC protest this weekend: "These teabag parties represent the newly disenfranchised white, rural voter - the backbone of the Republican Party and its southern strategy. The outburst this week by Rep. Joe Wilson, the obscure South Carolina Congressman who called President Obama a liar during his speech to a joint session of Congress, was prompted by Obama's statement that nothing in the healthcare reform package he is proposing would provide care for illegal immigrants. The fear of immigrants is a primal constant in American politics, but since the adoption of the southern strategy, this fear is at its core a racial concern. Immigration in the past 30 years is no longer about poor white people coming from Europe, it's about brown people coming from Mexico. Now that an African-American is president, protests against illegal immigrants can be a respectable way for people to say what is really on their mind - they cannot accept a black person as president."

Asked to Denounce Language of Incitement, Boehner Calls for ‘Rebellion’

Last week, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) recalled how vitriolic language and extremist rallying cries escalated an atmosphere of political tension to the point where the San Francisco mayor and city councilman Harvey Milk were murdered in cold blood. Milk was the first openly gay man to win elected office in the United States, and the murderer was not a deranged member of the lunatic fringe, but a former colleague.

Speaker Pelosi teared up as she recalled the tragedy, and urged everyone involved in today’s political disputes to “curb our enthusiasm” and refrain from using language that might suggest recourse to violence to people who might be “not as stable” as those speaking assume. The press sought comment from Republican House minority leader John Boehner (R-VA), whom they expected would second the Speaker’s call for civility and to refrain from the language of incitement.

But Rep. Boehner’s response was perhaps the most scandalous comment made by any politician in Washington, DC, in recent years. The House minority leader, one of the most influential politicians in the nation, when asked to call for restraint in language that might incite extremists to violence, answered by calling for open “rebellion” against the government run by Pres. Obama.

At rallies around the country, an increasingly hateful tone, complete with visual and rhetorical references to racist slurs against Pres. Obama, has emerged. From hanging the president in effigy (a rhetorical ‘lynching’) to portraying him as an African tribal witch-doctor, a monkey or an old-time minstrel show performer, extremist elements have penetrated conservative rallies against proposed healthcare reforms.

Boehner’s refusal to denounce violent rhetoric, and in fact, to reiterate the call for “rebellion”, suggests a moral and intellectual corruption that disqualifies him from any legitimate claim on political leadership in a society governed by the rule of law. Boehner’s response was far beyond disrespectful (to the Speaker, the Congress, conscientious conservatives, political progressives and the American people broadly); it was a sign of a deliberate will to sow hate and unrest in order to profit politically.

At a time of 24-hour news and a proliferation of television and radio talk shows featuring hatemongers and demagogues like Rush Limbaugh, Bill O’Reilly, Sean Hannity and Lou Dobbs, Glenn Beck may stand out as the most unhinged and extremist of all as evidenced by his jihad against anyone to the left of his views, disadvantaged minorities, Muslims, Latino immigrants, and progressive change in some of his most outlandish comments, including:

– calling Barack Obama a “racist (who) has a deep-seated hatred for white people or the white culture; I don’t know what it is….This guy is, I believe, a racist;”

– calling Van Jones “an avowed, radical, revolutionary communist,” then saying “Jones is the tip of the iceberg” as part of his over-the-top campaign against anyone less extremist than himself;

– stating “The most used phrase in my administration if I were to be President would be ‘What the hell do you mean we’re out of missiles;’ ”

– saying “We need to be the first ones in the recruitment office lining up to shoot the bad Muslims in the head…. In 10 years, Muslims and Arabs will be looking through a razor wire fence at the West;”

– telling Muslim Congressman Keith Ellison to “prove to me that you are not working with our enemies;”

– advocating disposing of Guantanamo detainees by shooting them in the head;

– accusing Al Gore of creating a new “Hitler youth” by promoting environmental awareness, and called for kicking California out of the union;

– in 2003, telling listeners he was praying for a gruesome death for Democrat presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich, and in 2005 saying he fantasized about strangling filmmaker Michael Moore;

– characterizing Obama’s new regulatory czar, Cass Sunstein, as a crazed animal rights activist who believes that rats matter more than people; and

– in September 2005, expressing open “hate” toward Katrina victims, calling them “scumbags” for not waiting patiently for emergency aid at a time their lives were devastated, and the Bush administration was forcibly removing them to distant locations, then preventing them from returning so predatory developers could exploit their neighborhoods for profit.
