Exactly what does it explain? Many people who are descended from Confederate soldiers are now progressive, liberal minded Democrats. Is it your intimation than anyone who remembers the sacrifices made by their ancestors in a brutal, gut wrenching civil war, somehow prone to being a modern day Republican theocrat? Or is this perhaps simply another "Southerns are all lower life forms", insinuation?

Note, there are two organizations, where modern day descendants of Civil War soldiers participate to remember the sacrifices that our re-united nation suffered.There is the SCV (Sons of Confederate Veterans) and the SUV (Sons of Union Veterans). Would Joe McCarthy belonging to the SUV , explain his right wing, witch hunts in the 1950's?

Nothing I'm proud or ashamed of, he just was. He certainly didn't own slaves. He didn't own much of anything but Virginia was home so he fought for the south.

I was invited to join Daughter's of the confederacy or some such shit but declined. I was also invited to join the Dauaghters of the American Revolution and declined. I see no purpose in joining either.

My point being - it's real easy to swing that broad brush on these groups and assume they're simply racist groups. I suggest you watch 'The American Civil War' by Ken Burns to get a thorough lesson into all aspects of the war and maybe it will help you understand the historical context of these groups and why they exist.

Of course there are racists in the south - just like there is in the north. No part of this country is immune from it.

of a confederate soldier is one thing or another. It is also true not everyone in the group is a racist now even if some may be. Why is that so hard to understand?

A response like yours is exactly why I included the bit about watching Ken Burn's documentary. The issues revolving around the civil war are not that black and white - pardon the pun.

Fundamentally I think the group is a good idea in principle, just like the SUVCW, Daughters of the American Revolution, etc. because the preservation of history is always a good idea.

The problem is that most of the SCV members I know are about as batshit crazy as the Holocaust deniers. They want to rewrite history to align with their own warped view of the world.

has done a lot of stories about the SCV. It's basically the modern day equivelent of the KKK now that it's not cool to be a card carrying member of the Klan. There's a few non-bigots who are members, but their voices are getting drowned out by the mouth breathers.

If you've never seen one of their get-togethers you really should go for the entertainment value if nothing else. It's a bunch of lard-ass hillbillies that dress up as confederate soldiers and re-enact civil war battles. The best time to go is in the summer because after about an hour in the hot sun in wool uniforms the good-ol-boys start to ooze cheap beer and rot-gut liquor from every pore and they knock off early to go sit in the shade and drink some more. After a few more drinks the political discourse (if you can call it that) starts and you realize there's no shortage of dipshits that make up the GOP constituency.

probably every other group heralding people who fought. My family has been in SC since the late 1600's so I'm sure somebody I'm descended from was involved in everything under the sun.

I won't do it because they are racist organizations. They can try to peddle it however they want to. However, no matter what historical intentions they have, they simply give cover to addled, ignorant throwbacks. People of any substance who belong to these organizations, IMHO, add a sheen of respectability to others who are up to no good. That is what is wrong with them, and as far as I can see, it always will be.
