1. I think you may have misunderstood -

- as I read this the SCV was ENCOURAGING Obama to lay a wreath in the Confederate section. As I remember it, there was talk at the time that Obama should not lay a wreath on the Confederates. The items indicates the SCV was "refuting . . . the attempt to pressure President Obama to not lay a wreath" - indicating that they did want him to do it.

I'm familiar with the SCV and while some wish to portray them as racist I've never seen indication of such.

3. Well, there may be some strange individuals in the organization

I work in Harrison, AR, a town founded after the Civil War by Union veterans (town was named for a Union soldier who laid it out). Anyway, they have a Confederate memorial on the courthouse grounds. OK, especially because they fly the Confederate flag, not the Battle Flag of Northern VA. Anyway, I walked by one day and, to my surprise, saw the inscription did not name one Confederate veteran from the area--instead it lauded the people who erected the monument, which is relatively new. To me this was downright screwy. Until I got thinking--we have a lot of KKK/neo-Nazi/hate groups around here.....

5. There are strange individuals (a nice way of putting it!) in ALL organizations -

- and I'm sure the SCV is no exception. What they do may differ somewhat from chapter to chapter. My involvement with them was for genealogical reasons, I did research so that a friend could join. The chapter he was affiliated with did community service, historical preservation, reenactments, genealogy research, etc. It was simply a heritage group and I never observed anything racist.

But I will say that a Confederate memorial in a town founded by Union veterans is rather odd, to say the least!

They have a museum in Springfield IL, and were accepting members who could prove their descent from a Union veteran. Had an Axillary for women.
