there was a time when this type of violence was described as "American"

Attacker wounds 9 students at German school

ANSBACH, Germany (AP) — An 18-year-old student armed with an ax and Molotov cocktails attacked his high school in southern Germany on Thursday, wounding nine pupils, police said.

The teenager entered the Carolinum High School in the Bavarian town of Ansbach where he threw two of the explosive devices, but they caused no major fires, said Ansbach Fire Chief Horst Sellter. Police could not confirm media reports that the attacker had lobbed Molotov cocktails into a classroom.

1. Yeah one of our famous exports
not really. I just think that we are in a world where people are losing their minds.

2. Anomie is international now
its horrific to think that an ax is a less-lethal weapon in a mass-school attack. if the kid had used a gun, it would likely have been 9 dead. not 9 wounded.

3. Curious these school attacks seem to plague countries with histories of violence, no?

5. I don't think there are many countries out there that don't have a history of violence. It's more a
question of how far in the past the violence was, I guess.

4. thank God he didn't have a gun!
if he got 9 with an axe he would have gotten 40 with a gun.

6. First of all, I hope that they all recover both physically and emotionally.
My sister lives in that part of Germany. The first time that she and my B.I.L. wanted to bring their son and daughter to visit us, the kids were terrified because of all the violence in the US that they saw on the news. Anywhere that you go in the world and there are members of the human race, this type of thing is possible. Now they understand why my sister explained that to them before they came here.

9. You nailed it.
My sister told them that the reason the US looked so dangerous on TV was because that was what they chose to show. She said they were under the impression that all schools here had shootings all of the time. Just like in the US news reporting; if it bleeds, it leads.

7. Nah - if it was 'American' he'd have been carrying an AK, not an axe. nt
