Cheney Spine Surgery: Former VP In Hospital|||Today 10:59 AM|The Huffington Post News EditorsWASHINGTON Former Vice President Dick Cheney is having elective back surgery at George Washington University Hospital.

Cheney spokeswoman Lucy Tutwiler says the surgery Thursday is to deal with lumbar spinal stenosis, a common cause of lower back pain in older adults.

Spinal stenosis is a narrowing of the spinal canal the passage for the spinal cord which in turn puts pressure on nerves, causing pain. Surgery is done to widen the passage and ease that pressure, typically by removing a bit of the vertebra.

Dr. Anthony Caputy, chairman of the hospital's neurosurgery department, is performing the operation.

Cheney is 68 years old. He has had four heart attacks.

3. It must be "torture" for Cheney to have to go through all that.
Would you rather be waterboarded or have back surgery?

6. My mum had that - it can be very painful.
Hope the operation works (it usually does at least partially) and that he has a new appreciation for doctors and healthcare; not that his other treatments seem to have done that.

11. That COULD happen, but it's very rare.
I informed my mum that Cheney had the same thing as her. She said, "He deserves it. I don't." Quite right, too.
