1. A Movie: "A Face in the Crowd" |

Walter Matthau's monologue at the end pretty much sums up the appropriateness of the comparison.

14. Almost 20 years before "Network" |
|
Yet it deals with the same themes in a realistic, VERY scary way.
Andy Griffith deserved an Academy Award nomination, if not the award, for that role. He is absolutely phenomenal and as far removed from Sheriff Andy as you can get.
I highly recommend it to anyone who hasn't seen it. Rent it. You will NOT be disappointed.

5. Years ago Andy Griffith played the role (I believe an award winner for |
|
Andy)of Lonesome Rhodes in a film called "A Face In The Crowd." Pretty sure that's the name. Anyway, Andy's character was a hateful POS who was on top of the world for a while, and then it crumbled and ole Lonesome fell, fell, fell. I'm thinking ole Glen very possibly could go the same way. Lonesome ended up alone, mental, etc.

15. Andy wasn't even nominated that year |
|
Alec Guinness won for "Bridge On the River Kwai", which admittedly was another great performance, but Andy had less experience and, in my opinion, he played a much more complex role.

16. I guess I'm thinking he was nominated then, but I agree Andy's was |
|
by far more complex. Hollywood is very political also...

...that allows Andy Griffith to show a "dark side." He's especially creepy because of his folksy persona. But to compare Beck to this character is unfair to the film. Even though the character is revealed as villainous, it taints the film to associate it with Mr. Beck.
Perhaps Father Coughlin, the 30's "radio priest," is a better analogy.

18. Lonesome Rhodes' character has a "didn't know the mic was live" moment in the film. |
|
Edited on Thu Sep-17-09 03:35 PM by gauguin57
This comparison was also applied to George W. Bush, who called Adam Clymer a "major-league asshole" when he didn't know his mic was live.
Andy Griffith was genius in "A Face in the Crowd." A fabulous portrayal of a complete huckster who attracts undiscerning followers via his folksy TV show.
