PETA and the Ringling Bros Circus
I was driving home last night from work and as I live just 2 blocks from the Sprint Center I noticed the Ringling Bros animal cages in the back lot. My heart just sunk because I am well aware of Ringling Bros decades long history of cruelty to animals. As I drove up to the front of the building I noticed PETA was in the front with their signs (depicting the beatings of animals with pics). I love PETA, always have and always will, but I cringed a bit and it felt sad to see innocent little children pass them on their way into the arena. Were those signs meant for the children, the parents, or both? Both. But still, second to animals I love little children and wish their parents would not parade them to the circus. I wish the circus would just dissolve - go away.

5. So you think torturing animals is OK?
because that is how they are 'trained' in order to perform for the kiddies.

good for you

19. I usually agree with you, but on this point, you're wrong.
Training wild animals and keeping them caged for 22 out of 24 hours is torture.

I, for one, don't condone the torture of ANY living thing. Want to eat meat? Fine. Treat the animal humanely then kill it outright. Want to eat a plant. Same thing.

Humans - children and adults - are off limits, period. No torture. No abuse. No murder.

28. tell me WHERE i justify torture or abuse of animal. i couldnt agree more. i have never suggested
it is ok to torture animals. i cant believe from my post, anywhere, you got the idea i dont have issue torturing animals.

but if you dont think it is abusive to give these graphic pictures of animals to children, you are wrong.

you say humans, children and adults are off limits.... these pictures put in childrens face is abusive. that is wrong

i have never gone to a circus or rodeo or taken children, exactly for this reason. and still, it is wrong giving this crap to children

18. It is possible to agree with an organization's message
but disagree with how they spread that message. I can't understand how anyone could think that terrifying little children is justified if it's for a "good cause".

21. Children shouldn't be taught that PETA members have anything useful to say.
And adults should recognize that fact on their own.

Good for circuses!

6. There is much to criticize about PETA; but seriously,
compassion for animals does not equal automatic disdain for humans.

14. i dont and never have taken my children to a circus or rodeo.
no, i dont think a parent is traumitizing kids taking them to circus. the kids are unaware of the abuse. where would the trauma be. they see entertainment.

do i like circus and rodeo. no. i am an adult aware of the situation and no desire to give money for these things

2. I'm SO glad you posted this. I learned about circus's treatment of animals at the circus
It was a horrible experience for my children. We were waiting with our young children at the arena for the doors to open. I'm sorry to say I had not heard about that circus's treatment of animals (I'd been to cirque du soleil before not ringling). I would not have bought tickets, of course, if I had known beforehand. The signs were very graphic and the PETA protesters were saying that the animals were beaten and tortured. They addressed some of the comments to the children (eg "kids, did you know that ..."). My younger child was terrified; not old enough to understand but the pictures really scared her as did the man who was shouting the comments.

I know I was probably very ignorant not to know about this -- I hadn't been to a circus since I was a child. Hopefully your post will inform anyone like me who didn't know beforehand.

9. PETA does more harm than good for their cause.
The 'scare the kids' tactic is a good example of that.

16. If I had my choice of saving an elephant
a life of being beaten or "scaring a few kids" I'm afraid I would choose scaring a few kids. I know it sounds cold and callus.

How long have they been doing it? How's it impacting Ringling Bros' bottom line?

20. I don't think PETA members should be in the circus -- they aren't talented nor well-trained enough.
Just put them in a zoo.

And hurrah for Ringling Brothers and other circuses!!!

22. I agree with PETA's message and forum more often than not.
In '93, I took the the young lady I was dating and her two little girls (2&4) to the Ringling Circus when it arrived in town that year. On the way out, a PETA rep was handing out pamphlets describing the conditions the elephants were kept in.

We had to make a pit stop so my g/f could take the kids for an emergency throw up (too much cotton candy & popcorn I imagine). While she did that, I read the pamphlet to better avoid boredom.

I read it, and I was quite disturbed. I went to the main library that weekend to research the few articles in periodicals relevant to the topic.

Since that time, I've avoided any and all circuses, and have sent an annual contribution to PETA. I'm satisfied with their actions, and although I've never found an organization, ideology, political group or philosophy that I've agreed with 100%, I agree with PETA's message and forum more often than not.

is to get rid of PETA. Don't get me wrong i'm an animal lover as well, but PETA go's too far with everything. Lets not forget that these are the same assholes that talked crap to obama for hitting a fly.

29. yep
i can't remember what show it was, but he was being interviewed by somebody & a fly kept dive bombing his head. eventually it landed on his leg, he smacked it & brushed off his pants. Then kinda made a joke about it. The next day PETA released a statement condemning him for it. I'll try to find a video of it.

34. The circus is a lousy place to see exotic animals.
We have zoos for that, and it's bad enough that we are depriving animals of freedom. Carting them around the country for rubes to see them perform silly stunts is ridiculous.

Sorry, but the circus gets an EPIC FAIL from me.
