Sign at a church on the way home said something to the effect "Why are you so afraid?" |
|
(not exactly sure what the phrase was, but it was saying that we didn't really need to be afraid of whatever)
I thought I would like to put a sign up next to it ... "Because Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh tell us to be afraid" ...
Think that might be too complex for them?

4. But I thought the God of the New Testament was of Love, not wrath ... |
|
If it was all about wrath ... Pele would have a bigger presence in this world than Jesus ...

9. On the other, setting up your only son to be crucified (nasty way to die) |

is taking tough love a bit too far.

Hell, and eternal punishment, first appear not in the Old Testament, but in the New Testament.

13. Yes, and if you "believe" well enough ... |
|
... he might just spare you from eternal damnation. Nothing to cause fear there.

That's a good thing to do.

5. Do they not see the irony in that?.... |
|
religion is based off of our fear of the unknown, they cater to peoples fears. To ask why they are so afraid is just silly, they already know the answer to that question.

10. Now, being the Agnostic/atheist I am, I would probably take it personally |
|
as in, "Why are you so afraid to believe?"
I mean, it's so ambiguous and all. Could apply to just about anyone.
and maybe that's their goal.
One reason why I dislike organized religion. They always think they're being so damned cute.

6. Maybe quoting the Gospel of John? |
|
Jesus tells the apostles at the Last Supper to "be not afraid, for I have overcome the world." But who are you going to listen to, if you're scared, selfish and impervious to facts: Jesus Christ or Glenn Beck? A lot of people got upset with Kathy Griffin when she held up her Emmy and said "This is my god now!" But there seem to be a whole bunch of people who would self-identify as Christians outraged by Kathy Griffin who nevertheless wet their pants on command from Glenn Beck.

8. There is fear based religion and then there is religion rooted in hope. |
|
You might have to visit that Church and hear a sermon before you would know what the sign on the outside means. They could be trying to reach out to "fearful" Christians and present them with a more positive view of the Divine.
