Ike spread fruit, flower, vegetable seeds

GALVESTON — Hurricane Ike’s storm surge smothered lawns, stripped shrubs and left thousands of island trees for dead when it swept ashore last year.

But the sludge-filled floodwaters deposited an unexpected consolation for Galveston residents mourning the loss of their greenery.

As soon as spring’s warmer weather could coax new growth from the barren landscape, volunteer fruits, vegetables, trees and flowers started to sprout in yards all across the island. it's mostly self-healing when humankind doesn't mess with it.

And so much of what's seen as "destructive" in Nature really isn't in the long run. Well, except when viewed in terms of how it affects humans and their economies.

There are even some conifers that can only propagate when their pine cones/seed pods are exposed to fires.

I've been accused in the past of being a "sicko" when I've said that hurricanes, etc., have beauty. I think they do. They're beautifully awesome and probably give as much, or more, to Nature as they take away.

4. Mother Nature is awe inspiring in both her destruction and her creation.

I've always been impressed by the fresh new green growth after a fire destroys an area. How such horror and destruction can lead the way to such tender, gentle beauty.
