Ya know what?
Edited on Thu Sep-17-09 08:18 PM by MichaelHarris
Keep preaching pseudo-medicine,hopefully you won't see some of the damage I've seen when people choose alternative medicines without proper education. As I mentioned in the closed thread, I've seen a child die because of Vitamin D toxicity, I've seen metal toxicity from vitamin abuse, I watched a friend's mom die at the hands of such quackery. By all means though, you keep preaching Readers Digest medicine over the internet, it's faceless, you won't even know who you're hurting.

Hopefully the Mods will get a handle on this dangerous practice. SEE A DOCTOR BEFORE FOLLOWING ANY MEDICAL ADVICE.

4. Thanks
it's not allowed but a handful of posters have gone around the rules by just posting links to websites with harmful information. Not only harmful in my opinion but the FDAs as well. There has been a trend for a number of years to promote "healing by vitamin". What the followers of this type of "medicine" fail to notice is, most of those notions come from the major vitamin suppliers, Herbalife, GMC, and Amway. Amway is Herbalife. When I did my work up into the early 90s I used to see where the vitamin research funding came from. It was, without exception from the makers of vitamins. It's no different today.

2. Is Beer Can Chicken okay?
On the grill?

I gave out my recipe for Beer Can Chicken once on DU and all I heard about was "Oxidized Aluminum" for like 2 days.

If you keep your BBQ at 250 F ain't no Al gonna get oxidized, man.

That entire post about Vitamin D protecting you from H1N1 is even dumber shit.

For sure.

Got my Flu shot last weekend. Waiting for the H1N1 vaccine in October.

5. thanks for the suport man
it really is full of shit and harmful. Those people who complained about "oxidized aluminum" probably have aluminum camping pots, maybe a few aluminum pots and pans at home.

3. Thanks for posting that
Some people react to the excesses of Big Pharma by going to the exact opposite extreme, and avoiding scientifically tested medications, just because you might need a prescription to get them. I seem to detect a lot of folks here who think that way.

7. While you do make a good point..
Edited on Thu Sep-17-09 09:03 PM by Fumesucker
It should be kept in mind that doctors make plenty of mistakes and are quite often either consciously or unconsciously in the grip of big pharma.

Edited to add: And what of those of us who have no medical insurance and lack the money to go to the doctor? Should we just do nothing at all?

9. Do you medicate
Edited on Thu Sep-17-09 09:11 PM by MichaelHarris
yourself based on information from strangers online or would you ask a professional? Pharmacists will answer questions for free. I would also bet most doctors would answer a question free. I know my wife will, in fact we get stopped all over town with people asking advice.

12. I had two physicians in my family..
At least until I was recently divorced.

One of them I would have trusted to give me good information, the other eats so poorly that both he and his wife are well beyond obese. I frankly don't trust someone to make good medical decisions for me who makes such bad ones for themselves and their own family.

I usually do my own research when I have a health problem. For instance I found out recently that a problem I was having with tachycardia was due to me overtraining in my exercise regime, I discovered this by dint of considerable reading on sports physiology. I even found out that just talking during a blood pressure reading can raise your BP by ten to fifteen points.

Now I don't know any physicians who I might ask questions of, it's been my experience that professionals are often loath to give advice in their area of expertise for a variety of reasons, not all of them due to pecuniary interests.

It has also been my experience when posting on busy online forums such as DU that bad information very quickly gets called into question.

10. Ask your doctor -
As a stand up comedian friend of mine says, "If you're asking, at that point, she's not your doctor. She's your pusher."

I agree that Vitamin D (and all other) supplements are BS. I kind of disagree that people who eat a sound and healthy diet need H1N1 vaccine. But I don't think it's a plot to do anything other than plump up the profits of the manufacturer. And there are plenty of people who are not eating sound and healthy diets who may benefit from vaccines. I don't know.

13. While a healthy diet certainly will help, I'm not sure that it has a lot to do with the swine flu..
It's my understanding that one of the fears with regard to swine flu is that it will act like the 1918 flu pandemic, which started as a fairly mild disease but mutated and came back in far more virulent form and indeed tended to attack people with healthy immune systems, where the immune reaction itself became the agent causing the death.

15. Well
I'm not the least bit worried about swine flu.

I tend to use my worry chits on money, or that someone will think I'm a bad guy (which is why I need the money -- to pay for things they think I ought to pay for) or stuff like that.

As to dying . . . I don't worry because I'm certain it will happen. I feel like I take better care of my body than any Doctor I have been able to find has. I wish it wasn't so and every so often I go and look for an MD that subscribes to the philosophy that the body heals itself, and disease is mainly a symptom of the body dealing with excess toxins. Unfortunately, I have found not one physician in 30 years of search who subscribes to that philosophy. They all feel that they can do better than nature.

And they tend to denigrate my personal choice to align myself with nature, thinking they know better.

17. I'm not worried either..
It wouldn't do any good anyway.

But I have even fewer worries than you, I don't worry about money since I have no one left to impress. The people I care about know who I am and everyone else can take a long walk on a short pier as far as I'm concerned.

And as you say, no one here gets out alive.

instruct my Doctor on all the medicines I should be taking. I am a good American.

11. Just call me herby
Can't go wrong with centuries of success. But you do need to educate yourself. M. Grieve and Susun Weed are as good as most docs and a lot safer than much of big pharma. I avoid doctors as much as I can (my grandmother taught me this and she traveled until she was 91 and finally died at 94). Flame away.

16. While I agree that one should take Internet medical advice with a grain of salt,
I stand by my special cure-all chicken soup recipe. If anyone is interested in it, I will gladly give it to them. :hi:

As for flu shots, I've never had one in my life but that doesn't mean I would tell others to refuse getting one.

I wish the mods would shut down "eat mega vitamin" threads as fast as they do "take prescribed meds" threads.

See a doctor before following ANY medical advice.
