10. I'd be my mother's type of New England pubbie |
|
She consistently registered pubbie but would never vote that way because, as she said, "they always run such putrid candidates!"
She voted socialist if they were on the ballot and for Democrats if they weren't.
She was sort of a Fifth Columnist Republican.

11. Fortunately in the UK that would mean just being anti-monarchy... |
|
if I *had* to be a member of any sort of conservative party, I'd definitely be the leftist who sabotaged it from within. Probably I'd be a dead one, not as a suicide, but because the party leadership would murder me!

27. Do we really believe that ours is the only valid viewpoint? |
|
Sometimes I wonder if Democrats/Liberals had absolute Taliban-like power how we might run things and how open we would be to those who do not support our rule and we would feel noble and self righteous and justified in our actions.
I do not agree with the Republican political point of view, but I do believe and know that there are rational Republicans who have a valid point of view. If I were to be a Republican I would be fiscally conservative (nothing wrong with making sure the money is well spent) and socially compassionate (I do know Republicans who are compassionate toward others).
We don't like the broad brush used on us, so why is it that we feel OK in applying it to others? To be honest, there are Democrats with whom I agree politically that I would not want to spend 5 minutes in their company, but there are Republicans with whom I disagree politically with whom I could actually enjoy spending time. Maybe I am privy to the Ted Kennedy secret because I am sure he felt the same way.
