If this isn't one of the prettiest pictures I've seen I'll eat my hat

http://www.popsci.com/node/38347/?cmpid=PSCenews091709 Even with a link to the onion. My o my has popular science mag grown up

In one of the few scientific developments likely to interest both the Governor of North Dakota and Method Man, scientists at the University of Minnesota have identified the genes in cannabis that allow the plant to produce THC. Finding the genes opens the path to either create drug-free hemp plants for industrial purposes, or to develop plants with much higher concentrations of the psychotropic chemical.

Publishing in the Journal of Experimental Botany, the researchers note that they specifically targeted the genes responsible for generating the drug-filled hairs highlighted in many a High Times photo spread. By impairing or encouraging the growth of those hairs, scientists could gain precise control over the level of THC in the crop.

(snip)

On the industrial side, states like North Dakota have been looking to change state law to allow them to raise hemp as a cash crop, for oil and rope production. The ability to create hemp that doesn't contain any banned substances would allow Dakotans to sow the crop without any changes in the law.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, precise control of the doses of THC found in pot could greatly enhance the medicinal marijuana industry. Currently, dosage is controlled through haphazard breeding and selection, not precise measurements as with most other medications.

1. One of our best friends is taking Medical MJ
He is 91 yrs. old and they had almost pronounced him dead last December - he is here today because the MJ helped him to gain weight again.

3. No doubt we need to rethink our present day pot laws
Medical marijuana is not an option here. I even got my doctor to admit that he thinks that pot in some cases is good for pain relief. I personally think it's better than the hydrocodone I take

5. And less addictive
I had a shrink at one point who advised me to take a nice walk in the woods, smoke some weed and holler at the sky to relieve my stress. Certainly a prescription I was happy to follow. :smoke:

2. You can engineer e. coli bacteria to produce THC in the human intestines & release it into the wild.

4. Looks like a felony.
Cops & prosecuters drool over sights such as that.

Call out the SWAT team and get the bean counters ready to appraise property & goods because I smell asset forfeiture.

Is there enough there to get mandatory Federal sentencing?

6. Cannabis without hairs and resin is like a human with no clothes
It's a really bad idea to remove a plant's natural defenses and expect anything but disaster. Not to mention all the GM pollen floating around on the breeze. What a nightmare.

I appreciate the pic though, I never tire of looking at well grown pot.

12. On a related topic, breaking story
it seems that scientists of the FDA and the USDA, in a joint
venture, had several acres of that "superpot"
growing in an undisclosed (for OBVIOUS reasons, lol) location,
out in sunny California

the other day, a large flock of sea birds found their way into
the field, and began "sampling" the product

evidently they rather "liked" it, ahem

by the time they were discovered, the damage was done, several
acres of this valuable research tool were lost, AND........

.... no tern was left unstoned!

(apologizing in advance for the groans sure to ensue, good
people)

20. Nah,
your story reminded me, by the way, of an incident in the late 1960s. The local constabulary announced that they had confiscated a few hundred pounds of weed in a drug bust; lacking sufficient storage space they kept a small quantity for evidence and stated that they were obliged to destroy the rest. They then announced that the stuff would be burned, and gave the date and location of the conflagration. By stunning coincidence, stoners from about six states just happened to show up in an adjacent area downwind of the burn. For some reason ;o) I don't remember the exact date or location, although it might have been Utah ~~~~~~~
