Why Is Tweety So Obsessed With Obama's Being Black......
He is talking about this again today and it is starting to irritate me. Seems like he wants to keep this issue bouncing around and given all the RW hatred out there - it's almost like him talking about this is adding fuel to the fire.

6. That's true, but Tweety is certainly not a racist.
So, I'm not really sure why you need to bring it up?

10. True
But sometimes whites become paternalistic and that is just as dehumanizing.

2. He's not obsessed. He's one of very few who are willing to bring the issue right out there
and get guests to discuss it.

3. I don't think it's fueling any fires, but only because I doubt the people that hate Obama...
...for being black ever FORGET that he's black.

7. Whether it's a big issue or not, it deserves discussion
And Tweety is one of the few discussing it. Racism was openly virulent and intense only a few decades ago. I remember the uproar that occurred all over the southern United States in 1967 when Sammy Davis Jr. gave Nancy Sinatra a kiss on the cheek on television on a variety show. That racism didn't just magically disappear. I'm sure Tweety remembers how a lot of racist Democrats in the south became Republicans after Nixon's southern strategy and the strategies of succeeding Republican candidates. Maybe some Republicans hate Obama for other reasons than his race. But is the election of a black man to the Presidency the new version of that daring kiss on the cheek that Sammy Davis Jr. made on television four decades ago and that went over the line for a lot of people entrenched in their old racial prejudices?

8. Matthews was a Peace Corps volunteer in Swaziland in the 1960s. Racism matters to him.
My own son is currently serving with the Peace Corps in Swaziland....which is exactly on the other point of the world from our home. He's been gone 15 months and has 12 months to go.

As hard as that is, it's much easier to communicate now than it was when Chris was over there. Now we have direct dialing cards and the volunteers have cell phones. When they go into a big city they can communicate by email.

I have tremendous respect for Chris Matthews passion on this subject, and I know it comes from his heart. Swaziland is incredible poor and has the world's highest HIV/AIDs rate. It's tragic; 70,000 kids are orphans because of the epidemic. The people believe the illness can be cured by having sex with a virgin....imagine what that does to the epidemic.

Please...no criticism of Chris Matthews on this. I've often thought of his Peace Corps service while missing my own son and wondered how CH's mom coped with hardly hearing from him for over two years.

14. Do you think everyone should stop talking about racism?
I think it's great that we're talking about it. I love that Jimmy Carter dared to say the obvious. Racism is a big fat ugly pile of stinking shit in the middle of the room and it needs to be addressed, not swept under the rug.

If you think racists won't change their mind you're wrong. Some racists won't, but many who have been taught lies will change their mind.

If you can teach racism you can unteach it. But it has to be addressed.
