The most disgusting thing I have heard in my life.
So I'm watching the nightly news like I usually do. My daughter is sitting right next to me. The commentator goes into a story about President Obama about the Nazi signs, and all the hatred and what have you.

My daughter says to me, that some of her class mates said they want to kill Obama..

I ask her... "why do they want to kill him?"

To which she responds, "they don't know why, they just do."

I was about floored by this.... my daughter, is only in the 4th grade.

Is this what people have come to, is this what people are teaching their kids?

My God man, someone drop a fucking nuke on us all and get it over with. This shit has gone WAY too far.

1. And the hate moves on to a new generation
The sad thing is these people are teaching their children hate. The kids were not born with it.

34. Take heart - we're making FEWER of them. In terms of socio-generationality...
they're going extinct. Not as quickly as we would like, but the overall trend is clear.

3. Oh, it's because they're parents talk about it or similar exposure.
Thoughts like that don't typically occur in a vacuum. I grew up around racists. That shit creeeeeeeps in, whether you know it or not. On, I guess, a related note: I'm far less worried about children repeating memes than the adults they overhear who might back those twisted thoughts up with action.

Keep the nukes in their silos (or better yet, dismantle them) and work to expose people to new ideas. New ideas, experiences, viewpoints- exposure to those things is one of the best ways to wither extremist teachings. If you look at terror groups- from extremist Zionists all the way to suicide bombers, or the fourth-generation Klan or any of that...you'll always find the same common denominators of insulation. Any belief set which has that strong insular aspect usually spawns extremist beliefs.

At least in my opinion.

8. You're right about how it tends to creep in
the first time I meet a black person, all I see is the black. Then I see the person.

I've improved so that the time elapsed between the two is maybe a second.

But it's still there.

...being dishonest ("Oh, I don't notice!") it's that it's at such a low level they're not quite aware. Anyway, kudos to you.

4. I honestly think that they are afraid that their kids
will listen to the President and come to the conclusion that he makes sense and their parents are insane. Much bound in racism, but not all. For every 'scary black man in charge' hick out there, there are likely 3 that are afraid that their inane rantings about the President over policy differences (too nuanced for kids to comprehend) will be viewed as irrational and off the charts.

Reference the 'stay in school' speech that had these wingnuts in tears on national TV.

Someone posted an article the other day about the JFK
assassination and it said that some 4th grade classes in Dallas burst into applause when his death was announced. I was shocked by that and I'm shocked by this now.

WTF is wrong with people?

I'd hope that people around here would need more than one man's say-so before dishing more dirt on Dallas (it wasn't even Dallas, it was a WEALTHY suburb)... but I guess I should be used to the mindless bashing by now.

32. Are you sure that is true?
I actually was a fourth grader when that happened. Mostly I just remember that Miss Roth cried. I was really sad, and that is all we watched on tv for many days (I actually saw Ruby assassinate Oswald when it happened!)

It just seemed the mood of the country was so patriotic then. Everybody was heartbroken. Kennedy rose to martyr status.

Granted I was just a kid and my world view was limited to one tv channel, my family and my classroom. Still, that would surprise me.

35. I was a 4th grade student in Dallas
on the day JFK was assassinated. Clara Oliver Elementary School--at that time, it was lily-white. There was no applause in my school; we were shocked and saddened by the news. I think the applause story is an urban legend.

It's repulsive. Children watch and learn from their parents. I was kind of hoping the narrow-mindedness would go to the grave with some of these teabaggers, then I remember they have kids and grandkids. I will never, ever understand the hatred people have for our President. W earned our disgust and disdain by his actions. President Obama's only "crimes" are being intelligent, young and black. And yeah, I know what you mean about the nuke. I think that more than I'd like to admit. :(

That's how I feel every day.

As an atheist, I wouldn't refer to the human race's intellectual capability as a gift, but it's a damned astounding thing to have just the same. An opportunity not to be squandered.

If all we're going to do with that potential is follow hate radio and the megachurch preachers then we really should just be destroyed.

15. The High Church of Redemptive Violence, recruiting acolytes
It's not right to learn to live together. No, some must be designated "enemies" and killed. That will enhance our safety and security. Until someone else gets the drop on us, and kills us.

Goodness, what a pointless way to live. It's fine to have a 9-year-old's understanding of the world when you're 9 years old. But to continue to cling to this juvenile outlook is sick and wrong.

17. This is an important subject, as I have kids in elementary school
Edited on Fri Sep-18-09 05:59 PM by Emit
The other day, I had my kids with me when I stopped off at a Democratic Party event to meet briefly with someone. I said to them as we were getting out of the car, "Let's find Sam and I will introduce you to him." My son said, "Is he a good guy, is he a Democrat?"

I stopped for a moment and realized how impressionable these kids are - and I thought, "Wow, am I teaching my own son that only Democrats are 'good?'"

I took the time to explain to my son the obvious: That just because a person is a Democrat doesn't automatically mean they are "good," and just because a person is not a Democrat doesn't automatically mean they are "bad."

In retrospect, at the age of 8, my son is still trying to learn how to distinguish 'good' and 'bad' and 'in between' - given the complexities of people, life and the world in which we live. He obviously has a tendency to oversimplify things in a rather black vs white construct - I think that is fairly normal for his age, and may even be a basic personality trait of his. But, it's my job to direct him through this process to help him become the best (open-minded liberal :-) ) he can be.

But, to hear there are kids that are saying they want to "kill Obama" is very disheartening. However harsh or outrageous or even subtle their comments may be, parents are leaving an impression on their children. Kids talking about killing Obama? That's way over the top.

25. What gets me..
What gets me, is this is coming from an average town in middle America. I'd expect this from a school in the deep south, but in Nebraska?

Well, that's what I get for thinking the conservative mindset in my area had a bit more intellect then the south.

My two older grandchildren came to me and told me they voted for Obama in the mock elections their grammar school held during the campaign.. My youngest was in pre-K at the time and they didn't have a vote.

Don't judge people by where they live.

31. why does this surprise you?
There was no American Dream...sure it was a good experiment in many ways and it achieved more than most cultures, but it, sadly, appears on the decline. This was how any barbaric tribe in history conquered its enemy. Demonization and inculcation of some twisted beliefs. They don't know why, but the average person doesn't want WHY, they want to be told what to do. It is easier that way, because that way there is little responsibility. "he/she told me to do it" is the litany of those who have been tried for crimes against humanity be it the german soldier, the russian infantryman, the suicide bomber, the Abu Graib soldier etc. It isn't about freedom but about enslavement.

This is the human race for the most part, and WE (those in the "western world") experience it alot less than those on the rest of the planet.

"Drop a fucking nuke on us all"? Are you kidding me? Time to grow a set and deal with life. Stop your whining.
