On Florida, a cancer grows.

Jeb Bush changes view on oil drilling in Gulf

by Jeremy Wallace
September 18, 2009

Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush earlier today told about a 100 Republicans at a meeting in Lakewood Ranch that his views on oil drilling have changed since he was in office and is now more open to discussing opening up the Gulf of Mexico.

“I think we need to have a second look at this,” Bush said through a video conference link from New York.

When he was in office, Bush sought to have a permanent ban on drilling within 150 miles of Florida’s coast.

On Friday, Bush did not say how close drilling should be allowed to the shore, but said Florida leaders should be open to talking about the issue.

Bush said drilling technology has improved greatly and that the risk of a spill has decreased.
Bush said the state needs to have a thorough review of the potential of oil drilling based on science and not emotion.

Bush was speaking to the Lakewood Ranch Republican Club.
