Upstate NY was once Indian Land

Hey DU.. Looks like Las Vegas politicians want to stop a casino from getting built in upstate NY.
They don't say that casinos are immoral or bad for the environment (local opponents use these arguements).
They say "This is an abuse of the land into trust process and violates the spirit of (The Indian Gaming Regulatory Act.)"

For real, when has America ever thought of Native American rights? Who cares about the IGR Act? It is a lousy Bush era law.

I personally don't want casino gambling in the Catskills. But not for these reasons at all. Reid is so lame..

3. Something has to be done to rebuild the Catskills. Ever since the demise of many of the big resorts
the area has been suffering from a depression.

4. The Indian Gaming Regulatory Act is not a "Bush era law"
It became law in 1988:

Reagan was President in 1988, not Bush.

6. It was home to the nomadic Fugaway tribe.
They wandered around, generally lost, and whenever they met someone they said "Weh da fugaway?"

8. someone please explain to me why Vegas should have any say about what happens
in upstate NY?? i mean, it is almost comical the casino issues around here. Having the indians run the casinos is NY's way of getting around the laws. The one in buffalo they have been trying to have it shut down because once it's already up and running and complete, they won't be able to stop it. But those are people locally opposed to it. And, concern over native american rights is a joke. Tell that to the state that has unsuccessfully been trying to collect taxes from the reservation selling cigarettes. They try to make it sound like EVERYONE goes to the rez to get gas and cigarettes... when i do not believe taht is the truth. A small minority of folks do.

I don't know what I think about all these casinos popping up all over the place around here... but las vegas needs to stay the fuck out of it.

10. There's a backstory to this...
and it's not so much about Indian rights.

Catskills gambling has been on the back burner for years, but New York has never allowed it. Donald Trump and other Atlantic City interests have been battling it for years.

So, the back door is for New York tribes to open casinos in the their names in areas not on tribal lands, but land they can have some claim to. New York would still have to OK the casino, but it's much easier for a tribe to get one than Steve Wynn or Trump. So far, it's been difficult for the tribes to open casinos off the reservation, but they're fighting to make it easier. Here on Long Island, the Shinnecocks are fighting for tribal recognition and then they'll fight for a joint venture casino closer to NYC.

Reid is fighting for Nevada, which wants the idea dead and buried-- it's not good for business there.

12. I'm all for legalized gambling, wherever, whomever.
I think it's hilarious to pretend that the casinos are somehow less harmful to society if they are located in Nevada, on a boat 9 miles out, or down some dirt road in the swamp.

Think of all the jobs it would create to have a casino bubble. Thousands of casinos going up around the country, only a few will survive. The drama.

11. Surely "for the children" and "to save the New York lichen skink" is in reserve.
But seriously, if gambling is legal then it should be legal, if it isn't then it isn't.
