|
Edited on Sat Sep-19-09 05:15 PM by PCIntern
who knows what's being taped in whose room when?
When we were young, in college or wherever, the odds of being taped or filmed were essentially zero...someone might get a single shot, but cameras were so loud that if someone were hiding in the closet, you'd hear the shutter click even over the loudest orgasmic yell.
But NOW, someone could have a pinhole-sized opening anywhere in the room(s) and you'll be all over the Internet before you can even shower.
I'm not sure this technology's so hot...
Please allow me to state that I'm pleased that the story turned out to be one involving false accusations, and that the idiotic decision to film the proceedings did have a 'good' outcome...well, I guess that's the best word for it...beneficial? No... Lucky? Yes...that's better.
On edit: whoever unrec'd this...well, you know.

Yeah, it is an issue. And once something is online, other people can download it and that is the end of your control over it.
Makes you wonder what psychological impact it'll have on all the 5 year old kids who will grow up never knowing a world where that wasn't the case. Even personal conversations with a friend could be used against you years down the road if they record one on an MP3 player or cell phone.

I mean, back in the old days, you'd say something to a friend, if he decided to chisel it into a piece of marble you'd hear his hammer tap-tapping away. But now with these inks and parchment, you can't really tell when someone is scribbling down your every utterance.

|
Thats going to be awkward for revenge purposes. You will be able to use a voice synthesizer made to sound like someone else's voice, and then put words into it. Then post them online.
I think the military has had the ability to do that since the 90s.

The military has no special advantage in this area of signal processing. It just depends how much time you want to devote to it, the principals are relatively simple. Enjoy your technophobia, though.

If this is not the case, I apologize. But generally when I hear people saying the military/CIA have special secret technology to be paranoid about, it exhibits both misunderstanding and fear of technology.
Honestly, if you're the military and you want to make fake audio recordings of someone, it's not hard to just get hold of an actor. There are unique components to human voices called formants (which are just frequencies that stand out because of the individual shape of your vocal cords etc.) but they're not impossibly to imitate or conceal...and the military has zero advantage in this area, because everyone has a voice, microphones are cheap and widely available, and audio analysis software is also cheap and widely available. There's nothing very advanced about the maths or physics involved.

How TF do you have any idea at all whatsoever what I think? I made a comment about small cameras and their potential to wreak havoc. DON'T YOU THINK THAT THERE'S A POTENTIAL TO WREAK HAVOC?
I wasn't condemning technology...and what I would suggest to you, young person, is go and find the children's book I referred to in the other post and read it and then you might understand how technology, even in the fifties, was interestingly portrayed as potentially deleterious to certain people WHEN IT FELL INTO THE WRONG HANDS, or was used in a manipulative fashion.
Or do you just automatically gainsay anything which people post???

That's how I know that you are suggesting that this technology isn't worth it.
Many things have the potential to wreak havoc. I can remotely access almost any computer on the planet if I know a password and the IP address. That doesn't make remote-access a bad thing. It just means that people can abuse it.
I've read plenty of material on the potential hazards of technological advancement. Of course the epitome of the criticism is technological singularity.

OMG, I had not thought about that book in *years*, and I loved it! My mom was in the habit of giving away my stuff as soon as she decided I had outgrown it (mentally or physically), so I am off to the internets to seek a new copy.
Edited to add:
Also reminded me of the "Mudhen" books, and The Worldly Adventures of a Teenage Tycoon (that one was depressing in a lot of respects, though, IIRC).

no need to have anything real to whine about.
Sometimes the point is just to whine.
Like, sometimes, when you've had too much to drink, it just feels better to puke and get it over with. Or so I've heard.
In the meantime, this thread is very funny..............

You are Correct!
Some here would have us believe that there is no down side to all this advanced tech stuff, and that we're wasting our precious time worrying about this issue. Basically it's a Republican: "You're either with us or against us argument". I say: BS on that. If you recall, the original ads for phones which took pics were of a young lady taking a snap of another gal's boyfriend pigging out at a restaurant and sending it to her. Great...just great.
