Weapons found in Bradley home

Sept. 19, 2009, 11:00 am

A large cache of automatic weapons was found at a Bradley man's house on Thursday following his battery arrest in Grant Park, Kankakee County Sheriff's Chief Deputy Ken McCabe said Friday.

Police arrested Gerald L. Carney, 44, of Bradley, after discovering 33 weapons, many of them illegally altered into automatic weapons, at his residence. Police searched Carney's residence Thursday morning after he was involved in a battery in Grant Park.

"To know this is out in the community is shocking," McCabe said. McCabe said this is the largest find of automatic weapons he has seen in more than 20 years. snip

The search of Carney's residence turned up illegally altered automatic firearms. The search produced 33 guns and a large amount of ammunition. The weapons recovered included Uzis, a Thompson sub-machine gun and firearms that are vintage military-grade weapons, McCabe said.

6. Nope it doesn't matter, he's long gone for long long time.
He's in the pen for at least 10-15 years, likely 20-30

23. If he's not a repeat offender, I'd be very surprised if he gets 5
Especially if the judge is a repug and they make multiple counts run concurrently.

This guy had automatic weapons, grenades, plastic explosives, and rocket launchers. All he got was 4 years.

4. Ohh what a stupid man. Do not pass go, do not collect $200
Edited on Sat Sep-19-09 07:51 PM by TxRider
He's bound for a very long stay in the federal penitentiary...

The feds cut no slack on that kind of thing.

Silly too, when you can own full auto machine guns legally with a clean background and a $200 tax.

9. Even worse.
I once worked with man, a former cop.

He quit and opened a gun store. One day a man gave him a .22 pistol with a silencer and he didn't think much of it, tossed it into a box and put it away and forgot about it. A couple of years later he went out of business, and when packing stuff out of the store he found that gun, and just gave it to one of the guys helping him move things out that said he would like it.

A year later ATF shows up at his home, and turns out the guy he gave it to was arrested for possessing it, they tracked it back, 15 years in the federal prison... I met him after he was released, working at the same shop.

Do not violate gun laws on auto weapons or silencers, they are not lenient about that.

Just look at Waco, they just suspected they had some weapons modified to full auto....

in circulation. Still, a very stupid move that will land him some quality time in federal PMITA prison.

13. Or, when the cops arrested him, they found he was packing illegal
. . which led to a search of his car at his workplace where he had assaulted a coworker that led to more guns being found which led to a search warrant being issued for his place of residence . . leading to the find.

Sounds like the product of good police work to me.

17. On the spot perspective's always worth reading; thanks
Do you know why he modded them for full automatic on his own? I don't know American laws on that sort of thing, but someone a few comments up in the thread said that that sort of thing would actually be legal with a background check and a licensing fee. If that's the case, especially considering the size of the hammer the government brings down on people with automatic weapons that aren't built/licensed legally, I have to wonder what he was thinking.

19. Sounds like a real mess
I'm doing the innocent-until-proven-otherwise thing on the firearms, though it would suck if the guy ruined his life with a combination of a fistfight and having bad paperwork on a few items in a large collection (the number of charges might have meant that many or most were legitimate). The former's a small oops; the latter's a gigantic one.

Any idea why he punched a guy at work? Real good guys I knew didn't go around punching their fellow employees where I worked. They got fired.

And welcome to DU.

32. Of course they aren't (as I expect you know already)
But certainly a collector of vintage weapons would have an interest in them. Just because he had a WWII themed collection does not mean that was all he was interested in.

Of course, Bush, Sr helped him get out of jail in both Argentina and the US AFTER he bombed an airliner full of women and children out of the sky.
