Dem leaders mull another Nov. recess

Dem leaders mull another Nov. recess
By Mike Soraghan - 09/19/09 08:45 PM ET

Congressional leaders are discussing whether to stay home an extra week in November because of Veterans' Day.

Veterans’ Day falls on a Wednesday (Nov. 11) this year, so if Congress stayed in, lawmakers would have to leave and return to Washington to finish out the week. Many members prefer being in their districts for Veterans' Day observances.

"It's a lot of travel time. We are considering whether it makes any sense to be in session that week," said House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.). "I'm going to be talking to {Senate Majority Leader} Harry Reid (D-Nev.) about that."

But that would turn the congressional calendar for November into swiss cheese at a time when Congress is expected to be rushing to finish healthcare reform before the end of the year. There will be only one week between the Veterans’ Day week and Thanksgiving week. And the week before Veterans’ Day includes Election Day, another day when many members will want to be back in their districts.

The Senate is scheduled to take a recess during the week of Columbus Day, Oct. 12 to Oct. 16. The House is not.

7. Yeah, there really isn't much work to do anyway
Here's an idea: Become media darlings by having a few more "town hall meetings" they can use as a backdrop for "wall to tall coverage" of the "enormous controversy over health care reform." And dragging everything out this way will accomplish two more goals: Delay change into oblivion and fatten your wallet with even more bribes campaign contributions. So it's a win all the way around!

In fact, if you drag it into the Christmas season, the media will be able to throw in a few "store santa diddling the kiddies" stories and really bring in the viewers so they can charge more for the big pharma and insurance ads!!11!!

11. Where is the FY '10 Budget and Appropriations bills?
Um hello Congress??? We can't keep doing this continuing resolution shit year after year after year! FY '10 starts October 1 and the Senate is nowhere near working through the House's bills that were completed before the August recess.

NO "interim" VACATIONS until the damn budget/appropriations are done!
