McConnell: Reconciliation on health bill will provoke 'very severe reaction'
By Michael O'Brien - 09/20/09 10:02 AM ET

President Obama and congressional Democrats will face a "very, very severe" reaction if they push through health reform, the Senate's top Republican said Sunday.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) warned against using budget reconciliation to pass a healthcare reform bill, a procedural maneuver that would allow Democrats to pass a health bill with only a simple majority of votes, and not the 60 votes needed to break a filibuster.

"If they try to use this legislative loophole called reconciliation, what they'll be doing in effect is jamming through a proposal to rewrite the economy with about 24 hours of debate," McConnell argued during an appearance on CNN. "I think that that will produce a very, very severe reaction among the American people."

1. I think the severe reaction will be relief that the Dems did not let the crazy right wing
Repubs ruin health care reform for all of us.

20. That's what I'm thinkin.
The GOP and their right wing angels in the corporate sector have already hired professional bullies to gin up dangerous fear and hatred in vulnerable populations, even getting Medicare recipients to storm town halls against government help with healthcare. They've allowed the amped up angry citizens to carry racist signs without challenging them. They've already let folks with guns display them at public events without criticism.

Does he mean the GOP and its professional right wing bullies will try to do even more harm to our national dialogue?

Wish someone would ask him what else he had in mind.

8. He's not even sure if it's a threat, he "thinks" there would be a severe reaction. Well, Mitch, ol'
buddy, you're in for the shock of a lifetime. The only severe reaction will be when people realize every single republican has voted against the best interests of the country.

What a long, long walk down the road of fail it will be.

6. Hey Mitch, go fuck yourself. Anything a Dem says or does, no matter how benign,
provokes very severe reactions. So what else is new?

Just in case you forgot: Hey Mitch, go fuck yourself.

9. The American people don't care about process issues
Folks in Washington have a hard time realizing that.

People care about policies and they care about results, not the process.

15. Severe reaction = GOP temper tantrum
and who the hell cares? Those old boys had 12 years in power and they did nothing but rob this country of everything that made it a good place to live in just to fatten their contributors.

Those fools don't seem to realize they lost the election and lost it badly. They also don't seem to realize that the only negative reaction the Democrats will face, other than more GOP demagoguery, will come if they don't pass comprehensive reform, not if they do.

At their best, the Eisenhower Republicans used to be a counterbalance to Democratic excess, making sure that social programs could be funded by revenue instead of by wishful thinking about how a just would would look.

The ones in power are reactionary lunatics. They no longer serve any useful purpose. Their ideas were tried for 30 long, miserable years and have been found not only without merit, but downright destructive to the country and everyone who lives in it.

I'm beginning to think that whole party needs a course of antipsychotic drugs to stop those voices in their heads that say they're the true masters of the universe and still in charge of the country.

They're not and it's high time they awoke to the fact.

16. OOOOOOOOOHHH Mitch - shaking in my boots here in Raleigh.
I am really afraid that a president would try to do the right thing. Then again, you are very familiar with a president who couldn't have figured out the right thing to do with 100 years to contemplate the question. Work was too hard for him.

Mitch, go the way of your chin - disappear.

18. A severe reaction is when your erection lasts for more than 4 hours
Stomping your feet. Threatening to eat worms, and holding your breath till you turn blue will just crack the rest of us up. We are used to such behavior from five year old children and Republics.

21. 24-hours of debate? The GOP had all summer but chose to send storm troops
to shout down any reform, rather than debating the issues.

Because on the issues of health insurance reform, Single Payer is best and Medicare works quite well.

So the GOP and corporate right decided to engage in dangerous reckless diversionary tactics all summer, and NOW he's saying time is too short?

And threatening even greater harm to our country?

Gee, what stunning ethics.

So I'm glad to see that he was also for budget reconciliation before he was against it. Another demonstration of true Republican ethics.

26. Oh no!!!!!!!!!! Will the Republicans increase their obstruction and will the cretins yell at clouds?
The American people could give a crap as long as they don't get hosed and reconciliation might be the tool required to insure that. Why would the American people have a backlash to majority rule? Another lame fail by sadly my more sensible and liberal Senator.

That's all the armed wingnuts need. By the way, didn't they 'pukes use reconciliaton to get through their tax cuts for the superwealthy leglislation in 2001? I've got a feel we might not be in this mess had that not been enacted. Shrub might actually have had enough money to pay for his war.

40. Here's news, McConnell.
We already have too many curbs on democracy in the US--an electoral college that allows a popular-vote loser to become president and a Senate that accords the same two votes to low-population rural states as to New York and California. So the devil with your notion that we have to further compromise democracy by requiring a 60-vote supermajority to pass anything important in the Senate.
