During last year's White House race, President George W. Bush couldn't believe that Sen. John McCain was struggling to attract 500 people to a May 2008 fundraiser in the Arizona Republican's hometown, according to a new book out Tuesday.
"He couldn't get 500 people? I could get that many people to turn out in Crawford (Texas)," a mocking Bush is quoted as saying in "Speech-less: Tales of a White House Survivor" by former speechwriter Matt Latimer. "This is a five-spiral crash, boys."
The Bush-headlined May 27, 2008, event was moved from the downtown Phoenix Convention Center to the central Phoenix home of longtime GOP activist Jack Londen. Democrats blamed a poor response, but the McCain campaign and then-White House press secretary Dana Perino insisted the venue change was due to a disagreement over media access. Bush had a policy to allow press into events at hotels or convention centers, but the McCain campaign closed all its fundraisers.
Of course, one of the biggest millstones around McCain's neck throughout the 2008 election season was the unpopular Bush, whose presidential approval rating stood at just 28 percent at the time of the incident Latimer recounts. Still, more than 600 people ultimately showed up to Bush and McCain's Phoenix event, McCain insiders said at the time.
