What mental illness does Orly Taitz have?
Edited on Sun Sep-20-09 07:53 PM by GodlyDemocrat
Seriously, for those of you who have studied mental health or are in that profession, what is wrong with her?

She is delusional, a failure at life in spite of many different forays in different fields as a lawyer, dentist, and real estate agent, is unable or unwilling to accept reality, and just batshit crazy.

And she is an attention whore.

I don't know what specific mental illnesses those would apply to.

8. Megalomania
Megalomania is an unrealistic belief in one's superiority, grandiose abilities, and even omnipotence. It is characterized by a need for total power and control over others, and is marked by a lack of empathy for anything that is perceived as not feeding the self.

12. She came close to being a poster child for immigrant success
having worked to learn English, get a (questionable) law degree, pass a state bar, and gain a client base.

Alas, that client base was a bunch of wackjobs that still think Communists are living under their beds and now there's even one in the White House and it's not even a white one, egads!

People from her general part of the world have a tendency toward theatrics, remember Oksana Baiyul? I'm not sure I'd medicalize her or go beyond saying that perhaps her law studies weren't sufficient to the job she's trying to do and that she needed to keep reading, or that perhaps she's not really capable of learning how to do it, at all.

However, incompetence is not a mental illness, nor is being wrong about how the world works. The dramatics are likely cultural.

It's just a pity she is surrounded by people who likely are certifiable and that no one is capable of giving her the reality check she so desperately needs.

17. Birferism.
On another note, I'm sick of people immediately jumping to "mental illness" as a defense for GOPpers who do stupid things. That dumbfuck who carved the backwards B in her face? Whyen she admitted she was a lying sack of hogshit, it didn't take a day before a lot of supposed-liberals were all over snapping at people for criticizing her. Why? "WELL SHE'S OBVUSLY MENTALLY ILL HURRRRRRRR".

This is just wrong. Just because someone's plainly stupid and brainwashed is no reason to lump them in with people who have actual mental illnesses.

28. Stop it
A lot of DUers have experienced mental illness in their own lives. I've fought a battle with depression for some time now, and my wife works with the mentally ill in her job wth the NH Department of Health and Human Services. The last thing that people experiencing mental health problems need is a bunch of uninformed speculation by untrained amateurs.

If this thread were discussing the diagnosis of a neurological, cardiovascular, or orthopedic problem, it would be shut down as inappropriate. The same standard should apply to mental health conditions.

36. This is one of the only replies in this thread with any worth
I was going to post to say something similar and slightly less diplomatic, so I'm glad you beat me to it. ;)

DUers' "mental illnesses are intrinsically conservative and vice versa" meme is more than a little aggravating. It's not quite as bad as those few idiots who just don't believe in mental illness at all, but most people discussing the concept here are stuck decades in the past in their understanding of it.

44. Yes, it is a nightmare. My sister recently suffered a sudden-onset psychotic break. She was in hell
in her own body with her own mind turning against her. It was the most frightening God Damned thing I have ever seen in my life. She was gone. Her eyes didn't even look human. She thought we were on the Titanic, ripped her IV's out, she thought I was in Jr. High but she also thought I had been married since 1979. (I was married in 92) It went on that way for days.

I thought I would never see my sister again even though her body was right in front of me. Lucky for us, she came back, and she's doing better now, but now this illness is a permanent part of our lives.

I detest it when people think that they can diagnose some other human being's illness based on what they've pieced together from Wikipedia, "Dr." Phil, and a couple of Oprah shows.

Internet diagnoses are worth less than the pixels they are printed on.

I've been suffering from symptoms of schizophrenia and depression for the last 18 months. And I have not gone to the doctor yet. I've been trying to self-diagnose/cure. It hasn't been working.

I never really understood how distorted reality could seem. I don't think people understand if they haven't experienced it. And I'd never wish this on my greatest enemies.

It just seems very ignorant to make light of mental illness. It is hell in the most literal form that I can conceive.
